I was told that shining and killing 'coons is illegal if you are not hunting with dogs. Is this correct?

Hoosier,
This is not correct. It is legal to shine an artificial light to look for and take racoons at night. You must possess a valid small game hunting license and have permission to hunt the property from the landowner. Some coon hunters that hunt with hounds are not fond of this hunting practice. I hunt with coonhounds and I have absolutely no problem with it. It would be a good way to spend and evening and maybe pick up a few coonhides. I often seen many coons sitting up in the trees while hunting. However, I do not shoot them because I enjoy working the dogs and want as many coons in the area to run. But there is nothing illegal or unethical about it.
Good Luck ICO Winchell
