I'm going to try to attempt to do a turkey fan since I have some time now. Any pointers from you guys would be helpful. I'm going to get all the fat off first. then pin it out the way I want and rub Borax all over. Let sit for a couple weeks to dry out. When that's done I'm going to use a 5 min. appoxy to keep the feathers in place. Am I missing anything?

After you Borax it, mix some car bondo up and put that on the end of the feathers (front and back). You wont need much. That will hold them in place. Within 1/2 hout youll be able to mount it on your plaque. Good luck.

Brad you've got the basics.... some guys remove each and every quill, clean them and put the fan back together in bondo. There are simple ways, like your way, and more difficult ways, like quill removal. Woodmaster's technique is a good middle ground. I make sure I get the oil gland removed and the bone in the center so the tail lays flat... then take a small wire brush and really scrub those feather bases and get all the meat and tissue off them. Once that is done, I take the fan and close it, and put it in a sink of warm water and dawn dish soap. Just take the fan by the base, and gently wave it back and forth under the water and let the soap get the grease and dirt off the fan. Do this for 5-10 minutes and rinse thouroughly......make sure you get all the soap suds off the feathers!!! You'll end up with a much nicer fan if you clean it. When done rinsing, blot it dry with towels and shake back and forth to get most of the water off. I then use a blow dryer on low heat and keep working the fan and the feathers will start to fluff up again. Once the fan is back to normal, then I do the heavy borax on the butt area and let it sit a couple days to soak any juices....then I just coat the exposed quills with hot glue and encapsulate the once meaty part. www.taxidermy.net has lots of tips also.

Thanks for the tips guys. I got all the meat and fat cleaned off. Left the quills intact to the skin. Then rubbed borax all over the quills. How long do I need to keep the borax on it, one week, 2 weeks? thanks again.
