I went out to fill my a bonus tag this past weekend and was about to pull the trigger on a 'doe' at 30yds when I noticed it had little thin 3-4" or so spikes. I let the deer walk but it got me wondering what would have happened if this deer hadnt been in the wide open so close. Had it been any further or in any kind of brush I doubt I would have seen the spikes until I walked up on the dead buck.
If someone honestly made a mistake and shot a tiny buck like this instead of a doe and immediately called a CO what would happen to them?

If you called ME, I would come out and take a look at the deer, listen to your story and more than likely issue you a permit (minus the antlers). Accidents happen to EVERYONE! I cannot speak for all CO's, as many of you know, but honest mistakes do happen. HOWEVER, when one takes steps to cover it up, such as have another person check it in, and I discover it, you will be charged with overbagging of antlered deer and possibly lose your gun. If it was an honest mistake, there should be no reason to try to cover it up. That's when I would have a problem with it. I have had several people make this mistake and call me. Not once have I arrested them for it. I have arrested several for making the mistake of trying to cover it up. They paid the price! If it happens to you, make the right decision. Or better yet, pass on the shot if you are not 100% sure of your target.
