Called in my first EVER coyote tonight. First time I've ever tried it by myself, and haven't been out calling a coyote since back in the day when Adam Brown, myself and a couple of buddies would get together on a semi-regular basis.....
Anyway, I'd been wanting to get out and try calling some here at home for a while now. I've been hearing the nieghborhood pack most nights, even well before dark. The wind hasn't been right for me to try my hand though, a north wind like we'd been having pretty well eliminates my chances.
Finally had an east wind this afternoon with the fresh snow falling, wouldn't you know it, I got home at 5:00 and they were howling! Got all my stuff together and went out and set up at my wood pile, not 80 yards from the house. ;D Where I set up gave me a good view of my woods, and if anything came to the call I would be able to see it out in the open.
Started calling, using a rabbit in distress call and a Sceery howler. It wasn't but just a couple of minutes and I caught movement across my pond at the edge of my woods. The 'yote came to the corner of the woods and stopped. I brought the gun up about the time it stopped and I put the crosshairs at the base of the neck...... Pulled the trigger and the 'yote took off running in the direction it was facing! Thought that was strange until I went and looked at the tracks.......
I cut hair! I followed the tracks for a while and found a few small drops of blood, so I must have just barely grazed it. Which would explain why it bolted in the direction it did. I learned a few things on this one, but I'm still mad at myself for not making a good shot. Live and learn. The good news is that AFAIK, there is very little hunting pressure on the 'yotes around me, so hopefully I'll get more chances at them!
