Funny you should ask about that.... I normally let the CO's answer, even if I know the answer, but a while back I PM'd Buster about that very same question- here's the exchange....
My original message to him:
"I just wanted to check with you about the specs for the carbines for deer....
There is a wildcat based on the .30-30 called the .357 Herret. The trim to length spec for that round is 1.7" and it shoots a .358" bullet. If the case length was shortened to 1.600", would this be legal to use?
I guess I'm asking if you actually measure the case that's in the gun or are you going by SAAMI specs on the cartridge?"
Buster's reply:
My clarification response:
"I assume you got the handguns confused with the rifles? Thought the minimum bullet diameter for the rifles (carbines is the term I generally use) was .357, not .243?
So, essentially, regardless of SAAMI specs for the round, if I'm using a cartridge that measures 1.600" and shoots a bullet of at least .357" diameter, I'm fine to use it in rifle format for deer, correct?"

Essentially, if your .357 Herret is a carbine (barrel over 16" and a buttstock), if you trim the brass down to below max allowed length, you are fine. If it's not a carbine (i.e.- in pistol configuration regardless of barrel length) you are fine without trimming the brass down. I don't have this chambering yet, but it's something I'm going to start saving for at some point in the future.

Buster's reply:
We measure the actual length of the casing. If you trim 1.7 down to 1.6, you will be in compliance, provided that you meet the .243 cal min., which I know .357 does

Ooops! Yeah, got them confused!
To my knowledge, as long as the bullet and casing meets the specs, you are good to go!!!
