Here is a series of pictures my wife took on a recent hunt. I got her a Canon EOS for Christmas in hopes she would start coming along with me on my travels and taking wildlife photos. This was her first attempt at photographing called coyotes… and I think she did pretty well!
We had a long walk in but we were able to setup on some secluded fields well before dark. I positioned myself in front of an old brushed-in stock trailer, she was directly to my left (Good ear) LOL!
As the distress sound started to play on the caller 70 yards in front of us, I quietly asked Carly to watch the field to my right, so I could focus on the tighter cover to the left. She replied, “Okay……… Here they come!”
Within 45 seconds of calling, we had two coyotes barreling toward the sound. The large male stayed closest, as he took a downwind angle toward the sound source.
After a 3 second pause in the ditch line, he hit high-gear across the corn stubble.
The second coyote, cutting directly into the sound cone at blazing speed.
He’s still closing fast.
Pulling into within 30 yards of the sound source: they pair back up.
WOOF!
BOOM!
In his violent thrashing, this big male found something to chomp down on.
Almost finished with the LONG drag back to the truck as snow starts to fall. Notice the corn cob is still clinched in his jaws!
Carly was very excited as all the action unfolded, and I think she finally understands why we hunt as hard as we do. I’m closing in on a personal record of 100 called/killed predators in a single furseason this year… but this cob chomping coyote will certainly be one of the most memorable when the smoke clears.
