Woke up to rain this morning, so no hurry to get out of bed. When we finally got up I looked out the window and saw a groundhog feeding along the edge of the tree line. ;D Decided it didn't need to be around digging in the yard, so I snuck the sunroom door open with the AR in hand. By the time I got there, she was up a few feet in a locust tree feeding. Drew a bead, pulled the trigger. It took a couple of seconds for her to fall- had me slightly worried for a second. I knew the shot should have been good though. I estimate the shot to be 80-90 yards, velocity with the 55 gr SP (handloaded) should be ~3000 fps, so the head shot was more than adequate. Pics are a little bloody. One less Charlie in the neighborhood. ;D

Hey man, nice shot!
We don't hardly have any groundhogs down here anymore. Those dudes are tough. It's no wonder it took a second for her to fall.

Yep, she did, and I didn't know it until I went to retrieve her. I hadn't seen any charlie's for a couple of years, then this morning I see her. This afternoon I look out the window and there's the young'uns feeding in the lawn. After an extended, round-about trip around the pond to get a safe shooting angle on them, 2 of the 5 didn't make it back to the hole.... ;D I thought briefly about dressing them out to try the meat, but when I saw the damage....................................................... This is the same load I shot momma with. Another graphic pic below.

Excellent shooting! We are moving in about 6 weeks to Morgan county, once our house is done, and we have groundhogs and a small resident population of coyotes that will need to be thinned out as well. I hope to do some similar "clean up" work in the near future....

I figured that they would be like a squirrel, most of the meat in the back and hind legs. Should have went for it.

I shot a woodchuck, several years ago, from my bedroom window, about 125 yards away with my .22 Hornet. BTW it was a male woodchuck. ;D

No just a PITFA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just eat the young ones about the size of a rabbit they are mighty fine table fare! We don't have very many whistlepigs anymore because the darn coyotes have taken a toll on them.

Woody, feel free to delete this entire thread if you see fit. I apologize if I've gotten into a personal attack, but I hope in this case it's justified as much as one can be. I've deleted the one post and all references to it.

Groundhog is really good eating. The big ones have to be roasted a long time or pressure cooked or put in a crock pot, and the young ones just fry like a rabbit or squirrel. They eat the exact same stuff rabbits and deer eat, so I don't know why people are afraid to try them. Give them a shot, you won't be sorry!

They would par-boil them first then fry them up. I've never eaten any though.

Well i guess one can"t have a personal opinion even when it is just that, I would have thought that being able to look at things from another persons point of view would be welcome and that if that opinion differs from another persons then that is OK seeing as how most people hope to keep the lines of communication and free speech open in this country. I am and have been a hunter, trapper and avid outdoorsman for most of my life. I grew up on a farm in S.W. Indiana and i also know that varmints can be very destuctive and costly both in a monetary as well as resource depletion scenario. I was just making a point that getting up out of bed and shooting an animal from your sunroom be it a groundhog or a 12 point buck is not very sporting and i would have to believe that there are local ordinances or laws against firearms being fired out of a window or patio door ... but what do i know I do know that the folks who took my last post down will probally take this one down as well as they seem to be very touchy and have a very defensive posture against a person stating their opinion when it is not in agreement with their views on a subject. Thank You

You can make all the "observations" you want but when you start personally attacking people on here we become very defensive. Once again I would suggest you look before you leap. We are a hunting community and as such try to support each other as much as possible. Coming on this site and having your first few posts be nothing but entirely negative IS NOT the way to make yourself welcome here!!!
It really makes the rest of us wonder just who you are and what you really know...

Thank You I am the one that took down your posts. It was a direct attack on another member. Unfortunately I did not save it but it was something on thread of calling the original poster out as " you must really think you are some big hunter" or something along that line. Ir was a personal attack and we do not do that here. We have no problem with a member stating that he did not think "this or that" is very sporting (at least for them), but personal attacks just wont happen. Thanks, WW

... but what do i know Until you know a bit more about what goes on around here, I wouldn't start off by attacking members that have been on this board for many years- not just myself. You don't know what the situation was from the original start of the thread. You also don't know where it occurred. Because of that, you don't have a CLUE what the local laws are/where. You don't know ME, nor what I'm about. NEVER did I claim I was HUNTING the groundhogs. NEVER did I claim any sort of "sporting" shot at them. I said in my original response back to you (that I have a feeling you did not see) that I've shot muskrats while sitting in a lawnchair- I suppose you take offense to that as well? The truth of the matter is, I shot the groundhogs (and the muskrats-- especially the muskrats) because of the destructive nature of the vermin/rodents that they are. Now, unless you've got something a little more constructive to say, I'm through with you on this thread.
