I've lived in my house since 92' and had absolutely no mole problem until last year. This spring my entire yard is covered with runs. Last summer I bought some of the victor style spear traps and never could get any of them. Not sure what I am doing wrong. I bet I have had the trap triggered 30 times and no moles. I just bought some of the trapline brand mole traps. Got them put in the ground yesterday. Hopefully these will start getting them. If this doesn't work. I think I am going to open up a section of the run and put a mouse trap in there and just put a board over the top of it. Have any of you guys had success with killing moles?

The spear type traps work good for me. When you set them, work the trap a time or two to make sure it goes in the ground easy. Next when it goes off don't just pull it up and then check if you got one. I always push it down as far as it will go and them dig down with a knife to see if one is caught. At least 90% of the time they are still alive and must be killed. You may have been catching them all along and just turning them loose by pulling up the trap. One other thing, when you set the trap have the trigger off the ground a little bit so the mole is farther under the spear before it sets it off.

Whenever I see a mole run, I wait until it starts working then blast it, in the run, with my .22.

Kill your grub worms and the moles will go away.

On the spear traps, I have been taking a shovel and going under the spears and pulling the whole trap out in a clod. So if there was a mole speared it would come up with the trap. I have been setting the trigger pan right on the ground. I will raise it up some. How much room do you leave between the trigger pan and the ground? I put grubex down last year and it seemed to help out some. I went ahead and put some down this year already. From what I read grub control is much more effective when put down in the summer, july/august. Using the grubex gets pretty expensive too. I live in town but have a pretty good sized yard. It takes 2.5 bags to do the whole yard. $20 bucks a bag adds up year after year.

A good mole killing Black Lab is hard to beat. I may get a mole every now and then, but they don't last long

I had a mole problem 5 or 6 years ago. I tired putting poison in the runs, and also used a spear trap. I killed several with the trap but it seemed they coming in faster than the spear trap was killing them. I began mashing the runs then watching for activity. I'd see the mole start pushing the run back up and I'd take my Ruger 10-22 and hold about 2 inches above the run until it moved. I would shoot straight into the ground. I killed 13 moles with 13 shots, but I still wasn't killing them fast enough. I finally treated for grubs and the moles left. I didn't see any activity for about four years. Last summer during the drought, mole returned. I didn't notice they were back until late fall when I decided to mow one last time. I was out yesterday and saw I now have them in several sections of my lawn, so it looks like I'll be spreading grub dope again soon.

I usually keep the trigger about 1/2 inch above the ground.

Is there a specific time of year to treat for the grubs and what to treat with? I too have some mole issues this year.

COOL! We used to do something similar to that when we were kids. There were rat holes in a ditch bank where we played a lot so we got the bright idea to blow them out of the holes. We got an old beer can that have two "church key" holes in it. We put some carbide in it with a little water. We swished it around a little to get the gases going. We then shoved it in the hole open end first and packed mud around it. After about 3 to 5 minutes of waiting for the gas to build up one guy pulled the can out of the hole while another guy threw a lighted kitchen match at the hole. We have some pretty good BOOMS but we never was able to blow any rats out. I'm sure we busted their little ears drums though. .

Whenever I see a mole run, I wait until it starts working then blast it, in the run, with my .22. When I was about 12 a neighbor taught me to sneak up on them and use a 410, worked great. A few years ago a neighbor didn't know it but his cat would hunt them at night in my yard. He kept complaining about his cat leaving dead moles in his drive every night. he didn't know where the cat was getting them because he didn't have moles. LOL, loved that cat.

haha, I thought about getting him mounted. I got pretty pumped when I got him. A guy at work asked me the same question. haha. This is the first and only mole I have ever caught/seen so I wasn't sure how to compare him. He looked pretty big compared to the ones on the trapline website.

My yard is two acres and the moles are taking over!! I built my house five years ago and always had one or maybe two here and there but it's like a mole feast this year. I also bought two of the victor stab traps a few days ago. Nothing has triggered them yet. After reading this it sounds like I need to raise them off the ground a half inch or so. I rolled my yard and went out the next morning to see where the freshest movement was. What a joke, they had been all over within the one night! Trying to teach my lab but I'd think I'd rather get one out to show her before she destroys the whole yard.

from what I have read the long strait runs are the travel/main tunnels. The zig zag tunnels are the feeding tunnels. look for tunnels that border concrete, like a driveway or patio. I read a lot of good reviews and over the trapline mole trap. I would estimate I have had my spear traps triggering 30-40 times and never got a mole. After the 2nd day with the trapline trap, I got one. I don't know if it is the type of soil that if have or just me setting the spear trap wrong. but I never could get any. If the spear traps beat you like they did me I would definately look into the trapline products.
