I picked up my 2010 deer mount this morning. This was my first year with this taxidermist after the guy who i had used for 12 years gave it up. Overall, i thought the deer looked nice, but it appears the neck and shoulder area is small compared to when i took it in? This was the biggest buck i have killed, yet the neck and shoulders are smaller then the 2 other mounts i have. Is this just a form issue? Seems like perhaps he could have added to the form. I didn't really notice until i hung it up beside my other 2 deer. Not sure i would go back there again for this reason. I noticed quite a bit of cape that was tucked on the back of the mount and stapled. Seems like this could have been used? Here is a pic. The left side of his rack was growing weirdly almost half inch behind his eye on the side of his head. You can kinda see the size difference in the shoulders in this pic. Much more noticable though in person. It was the first thing my wife noticed when she walked in this afternoon. Overall though i liked the mount, he must just use a different type form then my old taxidermist did.

He looks about right to me for his age. The taxi should have taken measurements [if he didn't].

It looks like either the eyes or rack is crooked. Is that just an illusion from the pic?
How much did the deer weigh?

Either the antler set is bad or the picture is skewed? I don't like the ear butts on it as well. As for as the form being too small, maybe? But probably not. Looks like it fits the neck behind the ears well enough. Thats the area that has to be sewn together, and if the form was too big it wouldn't work. The extra hide stapled on the back of the form is not a indication that the form is wrong size, as it's trimmed as needed from length, not girth.

"Here is a pic. The left side of his rack was growing weirdly almost half inch behind his eye on the side of his head." Sure does make a unique rack. I think the mount looks right, this deer probably just wasn't quite as heavy as your others. His rut activity at the time you shot him would make difference in his appearance also. Do you have pictures to go back and look at, or to compare to your other deer when taken?

It looks like either the eyes or rack is crooked. Is that just an illusion from the pic? How much did the deer weigh? No, the left side of his rack was growing that way. Almost right behind the eye on the side of the head. Thats why the rack looks crooked and is also why it looks shorter. I had never seen that before, he was also thicker then snot at the base there. I can't remember what he dressed out at, but i do know he was my biggest buck weight wise. My first one mounted was basket racked 8 pointer that dressed about 150 and his shoulder is broader then my 2010 mount. That was really got me wondering. Overall thought it's not a bad mount i guess, would have liked to see a little better job around the nose however.

Overall I would say the mount is not too bad. The size does not look out of the norm. As far as the skin stapled to the back that is normal as timex mentioned. When a deer is mounted there are certain locations on the forms that match specific hair patterns on the deer cape. If these are not in the proper places then you have issues that do not look correct. I do not care for the ear butts either but I have seen worse. They are just a little fat and the anatomy of them is off a bit. But overall it looks like a decent mount.
