Well I really debated on showing off George, my Striper.........but hey I figured why not, everyone could use a laugh. (I know I could, asked my sis to go to vension workshop with me and got my head bit off, like I can remember everyone else's wedding anniversaries!??....oops. ) He looks like a first mount, cause he is. I wouldn't recommend anyone using a kit from Van Dykes, I had to buy a ton of stuff anyways and I had trouble with the paint. www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?fbid=259209330774554&set=a.171661249529363.43602.171657922863029&type=1&theater Don't worry I plan on taking a Taxi class or two before I try again....if they ever give me some hours at work!

Good job! You've got the hard part done. You should attempt another now that you've done one. I've got a little model car airbrush that I got for real cheap. Think that would be the type to use for taxidermy?
I think I may just have to attempt doing this sometime. My good friend and closest hunting buddy is a taxidermist. He's got a lot of equipment, and is always bugging me to start working with him on it. Maybe a fish would be a good place to start.

I've been told a small mammal is best to start with, (after I got all my fish materials) but if ya got someone that can show you the ropes have at it. It is really interesting to do. I definitely enjoyed the process.

It was a good try and I give you kudos for trying a striper as your first fish. They are not the easiest fish to mount. I agree with you though, Van Dykes mounting kits are not a great idea. If you do decide on doing a taxidermy class on fish, I do workshops for fish and birds. Also you might be interested in joining the AIT (Association of Indiana Taxidermists) We have an annual convention and there will be a fish, deer, bird and other seminars as well as the taxidermy competition. Check out AIT on facebook. I try to keep it as updated as possible. Feel free to contact me if you have questions.
