Went out today for a few hours. To tell you the truth this is the first time I've been in the woods since my futile February shed hunts. I have been doing a lot of glassing from my truck though, so that counts for something.....right? The main purpose was to get my game camera going finally, and check out the mast. I took my bow in case I happened across any squirrels who would cooperate and give me a shot on the ground. I have to say that a 70# compound is slight overkill, but it's good practice. I need to invest in a recurve and some flu flus. I jumped up 3 bucks on my way in, and one looked pretty nice, but the other two were typical basket racked bucks. I jumped them right where I found a cluster of rubs and several beds while on a shed hunt. hmmmmm, a plan is forming. enough rambling...here's the trophy squill pic. ;D The shot was 20 yards.

danb, nice shooting. If you can hit the squirrel the deer don't have much chance.

Great shooting Dan. If you can kill a squirrel with that bow from 20 yards, a deer will look as big as an elephant standing there.

I was using a judo point. I like to make sure they have some sort of tree or stump behind them so my arrow isn't lost after I shoot. This particular one was caught with a glancing blow to the spine. I was aiming for his head. It knocked him down, but not out so I had to finish him.

very nice shootin there.....the only drawback I see about takin that squirrel is NOW the deer DO have a chance. They smelled you, and seen you and heard you where you may be hunting. I believe you have put those 3 deer on the alert. If not others.... I always try to tree rat hunt somewhere else besides the woods I,m going to hunt for deer. Even if you use scent cover or carbon clothes, nothing eliminates human scent 100%, them deer are alerted to your presence now. Young bucks become old bucks by goin nocturnal because hunters squirrel hunt, or set stands too late, or enter the woods in late sept to "check things out".

This wasn't late Sept. It was August 28th. I'm not to worried about it. I know that I haven't hunted in my deer woods since then, and the reasons why are stated above. I think a little over a month is plenty of time to let things calm down.
