I killed my very first banded bird this year. I was so pumped, I called the 1-800 # about 10 mins after I sat back down in the blind. Just dyin to get some info back on it.
Blah, blah, blah,,, My question is. How long does it usually take to hear something back from them?

Well if you couldn't pry the info out of them at the time you called it in it's usually about three or four weeks before you'll get your certificate.

If your prefix on the band is 1008 it was banded in Indiana this year. Probably very near where you shot it.

There was a good amount of banded young here in town on the river this summer. And I was in the 1st area of fields outside of town. No doubt it was banded here. Just wandered about time it usually takes for a reply from them. 1028 is the first #'s

I called one in last weekend and they said about 4 weeks. Looked to be a mature bird compared to the others I shot.
I shot a couple last year with bands and a neck collar bird. It took about 8 weeks to get the info back.
A lot of the banded birds in early season will have been banded locally and are quite often juvinile birds. A lot of the reports come back as "to young to fly" for the age at the time of banding.

I would think there would be some kind of computer system where you could type in the band number and it would come up instantly.

There is a web site that you can go to and enter the band info. and get a almost immediate response. I don't have the web address however last year when I called in my band numbers at the end of the season and didn't get a response for on one of them for several months they gave me this web site address and within Min's. I got my return. Months later they mailed me the hard copy.
