Feds Make It Easier To Get Rid Of Geese (CBS/AP) NEW YORK New federal regulations make it easier for local towns and counties get rid of the Canada geese, which have become a nuisance at parks, golf courses and other open spaces. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says it is relaxing the regulations covering Migratory Birds.
Towns and counties will be able to kill Canada geese and destroy the nests of geese that take up residency in a local area.
The geese cause poop pollution in parks and golf courses, and they foul small lakes and ponds with their droppings.
Animal activists oppose any rules that allow the geese to be killed.
Communities across Long Island, Westchester and Rockland counties have tried various techniques to get rid of the Canada geese.
Those techniques include, addling eggs so they don't hatch. Spraying a foul tasting substance on the grass so the geese won't graze. Having dogs chase the geese. Having loud sound devices periodically go off where the geese gather. And rounding up the geese and giving them to a food processing plant -- so the meat could be given to food pantries and homeless shelters.

My worry is the restrictions will fall to the point where any idiot can kill there "problem" birds. I got a goose this week with a .22 round lodged in it's breast bone.
If they truly want to control problem animals then allow those who have or get ADC permits the latitude to control geese as well. Yes (I'll admit it now) this will create some financial gain for those operations, but they would be held accountable to follow guidelines set forth by the State. I fear every goose just passing by some high end property will get a death sentence
Of course, I also have a little grudge towards the Geist group that shut down hunting on the Resivior. If the regulations keep getting relaxed, then all hunting could be systimatically shut down and the population of all animals will come down to unregulated slaughter. The destruction of aminal habitat is not going to be stopped, but open killing is not the way to create a balence between the wild animals the the ones in SUV's.
Yes, this topic concerns me. I feel it is one that we as sportsmen need to come together on and have alternatives in hand when it hits Indaina, and voice those alternatives to the States that are already headed down this road.

Not quite sure what regs ther are relaxing.....they already allow for this. All you have to do is get a permit (which is not hard to do), and you are in goose nest destruction business! There are several issued in Marion Co. every year.

The discussion is heading towards mid summer killing of resident birds, not destroying nests and eggs.
