I typed this last year, but my students enjoy it so much- I'm reminding you. I have saved several dozen goose wing featers, cut the tips off at an angle to make a nib. Then collected walnuts. Boil the walnut husks in a tin coffee can, letting the water boil off a few times so the brown is concentrated. Then, add just a tad of ash once the nuts have be removed. You get a dark brown liquid that really is the first permanent ink. I use 35 mm film canisters as inkwells. Pour the ink into the canisters, dip the quill in the inkwell and write. I use the quill pens and natural ink to let my students practice spelling words. Scott

Cool idea. A great "hands on" history lesson.

Woooo....... You mean to tell me that they are still actually teaching kids to use pencils and pens? I thought they started off learning to spell on Microsoft Word. LOL

That's a cool idea, thanks, will forward it to teachers I know...
The teachers here in Indy pretty much have to become bilingual, so it's a chore just to communicate with their students much less teach them anything.

Actually, the bilingual is all over IN. I took three years of spanish in HS,with two years prep in Middle school. Then, in college, two years of German and one semester of french, I use the spanish and German every day. Spanish Duh, German... I have a 7th grade girl who's family moved here from Germany a month before the school year started. She is a great kid. I also have German kids that are exchange students on my tennis team- when they heard "coach " could speak some German, they all came. I have 4! The French- took one sememster at IUPUI. I realy didn't concentrate- a really hot red head was in the class. I made sure she got to her car safely on a regular basis! One thing to add. puyt some newspaper under the paper, as it really stains!

The spanish speaking kids here are increasing exponentially and have slowed the learning pace of regular "Indy" students so much that they've created a special 2nd, slower paced category for them, sad but true. Also, my buddy is an IPS cop, and he has had to endure a lot specialized training on Mexican gangs, understanding minority culture, etc., etc., etc. One habitual 16 year old offender named Jamaar who the school system kept slapping on the wrist and returning to class just killed a cab driver for <$20. It's a wonder any learning takes place here. I'd put my small-town Warsaw education against anything around here (Marion County)...
