My daughter and I are planning on hunting some state ground during the youth weekend. I initially thought that youths were allowed an either sex deer plus additional antlerless deer up to the county limit. Bonus deer are not allowed on this ground.
The way the hunting guide reads,"…(youths) can take the number of antlerless deer allowed by the bonus county quota for the county in which they are hunting. The youth may also take an antlered deer, .…" This sounds to me like youths can not shoot a doe during the special season(on state ground that don't allow the use of bonus tags) and would have to wait for a buck. This can't be right?
I just called the Sugar Ridge office and asked what they were allowed to shoot. First I was told that yes they can shoot a buck or antlerless deer on the state ground. Then I read what the guide says and she put me on hold to ask someone else. She came back and confirmed her first answer. Then I asked if the doe was not considered a bonus antlerless deer, then could a youth shoot a doe first then return and shoot a buck. At this point she was as lost as me and asked me to call back tomorrow.
What is your take on this? What can my daughter legally shoot and how many(on state ground that doesn't allow bonus tags)

First of all I apologize for the extremely slow response. I have been tied up with other activities and have not been able to get on here. Hopefully you had a productive youth weekend. in either case, here is your answer.
During the youth season only, there was an exception made to allow for them to take (1) antlered and (1) antlerless deer on specific DNR properties where the bonus antlerless permit as typically not allowed.
Again, sorry for the late response but hopefully this was the guidelines you hunted under.
