Opening morning, a friend and I took my son and a young man who's family has been going through a rough time. He went with us on youth weekend, but missed a goose.
He more than made up for it!
I shot the first bird of the season- a big male mallard- he didn't even hesitate, dumped right in to the dekkes on my side, one shot- one bird. My pup put on a perfect retrieve.
A few minutes later, a group of woodies flew over, two didn't leave. While I worked the dog one the wood ducks, another bird flew in, he didn't leave either. I had to get into town to help my wife and younger kids who play soccer and basketball in youth leagues. My son stayed. They shot a few more birds after I left.
The neatest part of the morning.... The new hunter shot his first bird: a mallard drake. Total for 4 hunters: 7 ducks.
Monday after school, my two boys and I jump shot a beauty woodie drake, and then at another spot: two mallards. My dog put on three great retrieves. This managing the dog is great, but I want to shoot more! My kid is slaying birds, and I can only confirm two so far out of 10 ducks my crew had put down.
BTW, My hunting buddy is a former student who is now 26. We have a following of now 4 boys who are regulars in our boat. A waiting list is mentally filed away of several more. We've nicknamed our selves The Drakes and our bunch of ducklings.
BTW, my 5 year old yealls, "Boo-yeah" when a bird hits the water. As an added bonus, my 13 year old has taken care of cleaning all the ducks. The first day's haul he breasted out for jerky, last night's he cleaned and skinned for a crock pot duck or cider butt duck on the grill(like beer butt, but use cider- tastes great)!
