Night Hunting Coyote Questions

When hunting coyotes at night how close to you let them come to you before you shoot them?

What type of light do you use. White with Red or Green Lens. Night Vision. or a Colored LED light?

Do you have a quick on/off or variable switch for your light?

Do you set up out in the open when hunting coyote at night or do you still try to hide like you would during the day light hours?

Do you wear camo at night? Actually the question should be, do you think it's necessary to wear camo cloths when hunting at night.

What type of rifle do you use?

What type of rifle scope do you use? Or do you use a red dot type of rifle sight? Open sites?


What magnification would you use for night hunting if you had a variable power scope that went from 4x to 16x magnification.

What type of light do you use. White with Red or Green Lens. Night Vision. or a Colored LED light? - I have a green Laser light that mounts on my scope.  White light with red or green lens works well with a partner to hold it. 

Do you have a quick on/off or variable switch for your light? - Just a push button

Do you set up out in the open when hunting coyote at night or do you still try to hide like you would during the day light hours? - Sit against something to hide your outline 

Do you wear camo at night? Actually the question should be, do you think it's necessary to wear camo cloths when hunting at night. - No. 

What type of rifle do you use? - .223 works well, but use what you got.. anything you legally own can be used. .22 LR really isn't enough to get the job done well.

What type of rifle scope do you use? Or do you use a red dot type of rifle sight? Open sites? - I like a regular scope.  Lighted reticles are nice too.


What magnification would you use for night hunting if you had a variable power scope that went from 4x to 16x magnification. - keep it on 4x, increase magnification for longer shots. 

Haven't done a lot of coyote hunting, so just my $ .02

Let them get as close as they're going to get. I like shooting them with a shotgun and have anywhere from 7 to 40 or so steps. We also take a .22-250 with a 4x9 scope and holosight on the shotgun. Lower power will let more light in. We use a red lens.

I've called them in standing in the back of the truck before. I really don't think camo is needed.

What type of light do you use. White with Red or Green Lens. Night Vision. or a Colored LED light? I use red led night eyes scan head lamp and night eyes kill light. Switch kill light between my 25-06 and my shotgun. My two primary partners love night vision.

Do you have a quick on/off or variable switch for your light? Kill light has pressure switch that I can velcro to weapin. Has two modes either hold for on release for off or standard on/off. Scan headlamp has on/off which has 2 modes full power and power setting for which mine is at 1/2 power.

Do you set up out in the open when hunting coyote at night or do you still try to hide like you would during the day light hours? It depends on situation how out in the open I stand. Yet I almost always stand and never allow myself to be skylined.

Do you wear camo at night? Actually the question should be, do you think it's necessary to wear camo cloths when hunting at night. I wear black or camo clothing. For young yotes its not necessary yet call shy older dogs are different ballgame.

What type of rifle scope do you use? Or do you use a red dot type of rifle sight? Open sites? Rifle 3x9x40 scope nothing less than 40 to allow sufficient light into sight. On shotgun open fiber optic sights.


What magnification would you use for night hunting if you had a variable power scope that went from 4x to 16x magnification. I leave mine at 3x and adjust as necessary.

Hey Predator Hunter. I'm interested in going hunting with you. Send me a PM with some information. I'm in Warrick County but only hunt public places right now.

I need to wait until after next Tuesday as I'm getting my truck repaired. Right now it's not dependable and will not always start when it's cold outside. I have to heat the distributor with a hot air blower before it will start after sitting all night in the cold. I got a bad engine control module put in two years ago and didn't know what the problem was until recently. These engine control modules ECM cost $200 and I was checking out any other possible reason why the truck would not start before I bought a new EGM. Anyway after I get the old ECM taken out and the new one installed I'll know if it's fixed or not. I'm going to tell the mechanic to fix the thing so I can depend on it starting even in cold weather. That's the main thing that keeping me grounded this year.

I've got a night light but I need a better one that brighter than the one I have. I want one that's adjustable in brightness and focus to attach to a AR15 1913 Picatinny rail.

I've recently began hunting and heard a multiple coyotes one night getting down from a stand. Hearing those howls was one of the most exciting things I've ever heard. I was wondering if anyone had any advice or pointers for someone starting out coyote/predator hunting. I don't know much about it at all except those electronic distress calls they sell at the stores. Anything would be great, thanks!

I am going to start night hunting them with another. He'll be using my 308 target rifle with a modified Leupold VX3 6.5-20X. I'll be using an 870 with a low power scope and weapon mounted red light LED light loaded with 4 buck. I'm thinking just dark clothing and at least making sure I'm not silhouetted against the sky.
