Hello all,
I am moving to Valparaiso next month to start an internship with arcelormittal over the next year and will be living with my uncle. He pretty much lives right in dt valpo. Is there anyone that lives up here and is experienced with the area, as in where to go to do some good fishing AND deer, rabbit, squirrel, and turkey hunting. I just turned 25 and have lived in Hamilton County for 22 years now so this will be a big move for me. If anyone is ever looking for someone to do some of these things with, I am more than happy to. I won't know anyone in the area, but luckily I have a good friend that lives in Rensselaer right off 49 so his place is a straight shot. I saw some public lands not too far like Aukiki, Jasper-Pulaski and a couple others. Any tips on where to go is much appreciated.
Thanks, Matthew

2175: Valparaiso is a great town with good food and plenty of entertainment I know because the wife and I do most of our shopping there as well as dining. Michigan city has Trail Creek and the pier area which offers good Salmon and sometimes Perch fishing you also have several other creeks that have migrating fish. As far as public ground goes Jasper-Pulaski,Kingsbury, Kankakee, and Winamac are are good places to go, I like Winamac the best. There a several lakes within a hour drive of Valpo that are very good fishing. Valparaiso is a great place, ENJOY!

I thought Kingsbury range was only a 100 yd max range? Yep, AND you have to pay, AND you have to deal with a range officer, AND there is a timed schedule for shooting! Although it is all new and modernized, and crowded all the time. Forget all that, Jasper-Pulaski and Winimac are do it yourself and free. Jay

I shot there once or twice. It seemed like there was a 5-10 minute break every 10 minutes, and you have to stand behind the yellow line while people go down range to check targets. That took too long for what I needed to do so now that I have my own place where I can shoot out to 350 yds or so I never hit a public range again.

I was unaware that Kingsbury was only 100 yards because I have never been there or at any range,I do all my shooting at home. If I need a longer distance I just drive down a county road and shoot at whatever highway signs are around and the nice thing about that is somebody else replaces the target.

Jasper-Pulaski looks like a nice area..You ever hunt in there?

Never at JP, only a few times at Winimac, but ironically I do hit Kingsbury regularly. They all have good deer hunting. Kingsbury does has refuge areas you can't go in but the deer sure do. You just sit outside them and wait for the evening feed in the ag fields and take your pic. Of course you got to know where to go but I have been going since I started hunting and only live 12mi. My neighbor works at the steel mill you mentioned. Big place. He has nearly 30yrs in and only 50yrs old, about to retire. He makes serious money and has unreal vac time. Must be nice! Shoot me a pm if you want any info on the shooting or hunting areas. Glad to help.
Jay

Well here is my new home in valparaiso Now All you need is a cross bow.....LOL Compound Bow - Check. Urban Zone - Check. Legal to hunt with a bow in a subdivision - Nope. If only, if only. I have five of them that show up daily now. It is such a tease!! All of those hours I have put in my tree stand haha and now I get to watch them through my window while sipping coffee, I can make noise, I can move around, and they never get startled. It's really awesome
