I hope this isn't the all-time dumbest question ever put on here.... It's been decades since I have had a trapline, and I'm completely out of touch with fur prices etc. My question is, realistically, (having to drive about one and one half mile) to my traps, realistically how many coon skins would I have to stack up to make it worth my while.. I'm nearing 68 years of age, and don't get around all that great, but I do get around.... Thanks so much in advance... Dave

Dave I don't know if it will pay for your efforts but if your having fun doing it ,then what does it matter what you make off of it. I wish I had the time to trap like I did when I was younger. It was one of my must favorite things to do. Now I have just enough time to hunt yet alone do any trapping. Jeff

Jeff Basically what I was going to say, if you pay for some of your trapping gear you are already ahead of most other hunting related ventures.

Dave Go to trapperman.com and read some of the not so old post and you will get an idea as to what furs are worth. I remember some only gettin $2.50 for a skined and dried coon. Some only got $1.00 for there yotes. Others did better but furs are in the tank right now. I head the the big auction house in canada.had a million coon that did not sell last year. Russa and China is big importer of fur and they are not buying. Some of the trap ers are not gona trap coon this year hoping tthings.will kind of rebound. Not trying to rain on your parade. If you do it for fun and enjoyment go for it. Better to spend your money on some thing you enjoy than set at home wishing you had. Best of luck Onebentarrow

Yep, That's pretty much why I'm snooping around... A couple years ago I thought I'd trap a bit and caught by far the largest coon I've ever seen let alone caught... This is a coon that years ago would have EASILY brought $40 or more... I GOT $3.00. I was so blasted mad... Heck, the gas I used cost twice that much...

The way it's looking now I doubt that this coming season if you will be able to give a coon away. The fur market is not looking good, but like already said, if you enjoy doing it lay out a small line and have fun.

Also if this is your deer woods you'd be pretty well off targeting coyotes anyway since they are your competition

If you were able to trap, prep, tan and sell as a finished good or in some type of craft you may be able to do better without having to catch a million coons at a penny a piece. I am not very good at crafty stuff so I havn't the slightest idea if it is even possible. Just a thought.

I get F-F-G magazine, and have for as long as I can remember. They said that because of the Russian Embargo, USA fur buyers cannot sell furs to Russia, so the prices of 'coons are in the tank. Russia is "THE" market for 'coons. Without them, there is no market. It was said, if trapping at all this year, target coyote as they will be the only fur worth trapping. Rats are back to $3-$4 each.
