On the Tennessee Wildlife Resources (TWRA) website there is currently a story that includes a trail cam picture of a cougar in western Tennessee. It could be the first cougar confirmed in TN in a long time.
There have been over 50 cougars confirmed in Missouri and Arkansas in recent years also. It's kind of interesting to see cougars appearing in the Midwest and in other eastern states.

This week the same or another cougar was seen on a trail cam video in Humphreys County, Tennessee which is east of the Tennessee River in west central Tennessee.
A biologist with the TWRA said he thinks the cougar or cougars seen in TN recently likely came from states west of the Mississippi River. He also said the TWRA thinks cougars may expand into Tennessee one day.
A lot of local news stations in Nashville have been covering this story and the video can be seen on their websites.

I hate the thought of having wild cougars in my woods. Another reason to carry... Absolutely Which is one of the main reasons I purchased a handgun to carry with me when I'm out in the night trying to call in predators like Coyotes or foxes. The thought of me sitting out in the dark in the woods or fields and having a big cat sneak up on me is rather frightening. So I agree with you 100%. If I can't swing my AR15 around to shoot a cougar then the hand gun is my back up plan. But I prefer not to have to even think about a cougar being in the area I'm hunting. I've heard rumors about cougars being in my neck of the woods since I was in grade school. I use to walk home alone down this long gravel road that meandered though the woods and never liked that walk home from my friends house at night.

If you follow the Facebook page there are several comments about cougars having been in Tennessee for quite some time. Including Panthers, which makes sense because of the long range of these large cats. Large cats like bears require alot of respect which we all know humans don't have too much of. In my opinion though bears are much more problematic because of their willingness to go into urban areas for trash, bird feeders, and gardens. Carrying a firearm is a great idea, but I'm willing to bet the most dangerous animals are two legged.
