When I came into consciousness this morning I could hear the wind in the pines. It wasn't a good sign since I'd planned on doing some calling on my President's day off. I have a couple protected spots where the winds don't blow too hard so I decided to head on out and try my luck. On my first stand I drew a blank, so I headed off to another property. On my second stand I was set up looking to the east along the north side of a large gravel pit. I had sat my FoxPro in the cornfield that borders the gravel pit. I selected a jackrabbit distress sound and turned on the call. In less than two minutes I spotted a coyote exposing the front half of itself while looking out of cover into the cornfield. I raised my rifle and quickly found the standing coyote in my scope. I steadied the crosshairs just behind his shoulder and squeezed off a shot, sending out a 55 grain HP from my .22-250 Remington. At the shot the coyote went straight down. I quickly selected a coyote pup distress sound and let it play on the FoxPro for a couple minutes. When nothing else came in I shut it down and walked down to check on the coyote I'd shot. I found him DRT right where he'd stood when I shot at him. He turned out to be a male coyote the would weigh between 35 and 40 pounds. He was in pretty good shape for a late winter coyote. If you look at the picture you can see some tall cane llike grass along the edge of the cornfield. The coyote peeked out of that grass about half way toward the east end. Good hunting y'all..
