Another question for everyone. A lot of the pages I'm reading talks about taking a shotgun with you as well as your rifle when chasing coyotes. Anyone regularly do this? Does this depend on area hunting? What load do you use? What choke? Just trying to learn as much as I can. Thanks in advance!

I did with a turkey choke and hornady varmit, as well as my ar. that being said I never did kill a coyote lol but I would've I'm serious, not enough patience for that stuff not very good at the sit and wait game

While I wouldn't use this recipe for predator calling, I've killed a coyote with 1 3/4 oz. of #6 shot at 20 yds while turkey hunting. I lip squeaked it in, and it stopped, looking right at me. I put the front bead right under it's nose and squeezed the trigger.

When my departed wife went with me she carried 1 don't remember what choke and shot size though, probably 6 shot because that's all I had. Now I've got a full selection of chokes and 3' 4 shot turkey loads.

My dad carries one when we go especially when hunting brushy areas. I use 223 and he has a 12 with full choke and buck shot. Hevy shot make a Coyote load I believe it is t shot. Not sure of the size of that but bigger than bb. I killed the first one I ever tried to call in with a 20 gauge 870 and smooth bore rifled slug. I never will forget that. I would of had shot load I could have killed two. Coyotes skin is not that tough compared to some other fur bearers. Size four or less should get good penetration depending on distance.

Ironically I am going to reconsider the 4 shot. The coyote I caught today had 4 shot in both shoulders and neck when I skinned it. I assume head on. It didn't have much penetration as most was just under the skin but it didn't kill it. I assume a long shot as well. I would guess 40 yds or less and more of a broadside shot with a shotgun.

I like to carry both, but if I am able to see a pretty good distance then I will leave the shotgun in the truck. .22-250 and 12 ga. with full choke and 4 buck. Shotgun shots have been 7-20 steps. For everything else, the rifle is used

Man, I take a half dozen guns with me to the grocery store, so a shotgun is a given. One never knows when all hell is going to break lose ...and I'm getting one of those frozen turkeys.

Normally, I shoot Coyotes with one of my Deer rifles, be it my .308, .222, 7.62 X 39 m/m, or .270. I shot my very first Coyote, down here in Ky, using my 20 gauge while hunting Wild Turkey, using full choke 3" 20 gauge with #5 shot. Just happen to shoot a Coyote last Month, while on a Squirrel Hunt, with my .22 LR CZ-452 rifle. Took three shots so I really don't recommend a .22 LR for Coyotes.

Not much sitting and waiting hunting yotes. Twenty minutes or so per calling location then move on. Most respond in the first ten minutes.

As I have reflected back through time I am positive I did quite a bit wrong while making my attempt and maybe one day I'll be able to buy some stuff and try it again or go with an experienced person but for now it's on a low priority list for me
