Where I hunt deer all through bow and shotgun at two places I heard coyotes some were real close so I thought I would try and kill a few this winter. Now I dont see any hear any see any tracks but there has been hardly any snow either for tracks I put out two baits and they dont seem to get hit. Its like they moved out any ideas? I really would like to kill a few to help out the fawns this spring.
Bait is bones and meat scraps lungs guts and the likes from a local butcher Dave

Dave,
It's mating season and their patterns change. The season is almost over. They are out there. Tom

I have noticed the same thing in certain areas. Don't know why. At my parents place I see lots of tracks but can't seem to be there when they are.

A coyotes range is many miles. May only come around once every two weeks AND they follow the food. Might be someone has already killed them too.

Have a good friend that traps a bunch. Told me a coyote's home range can be as much as a 25 mile radius. (That's a bunch of territory). Like deer they have preferred area's in the winter and because of lack of food travel a lot more in winter month's. Also Feb, March is breeding season so are on the move looking for mates. Stick with the sets as they will find them. We lost a horse 5 years ago in Feb. Disposed of the carcus in a large sink hole. Nothing touched it for almost 2 months, then all of the sudden over a 3 day period it was picked clean to the bone's!!!! A 1200 lb. horse.

Coyotes do have huge ranges. Some are more local but depends on cover and food. Coyotes don't often hit food piles as often as one thinks. They likely are close but may avoid food piles as they are very cautious but once they start on one it will be gone shortly. It is often stated that on a Coyote trap set you can guess one comes by about every 5 to 7 days due to their range. Now some will visit every night if they are comfortable and have food and cover. Keep at it but it is hard when the weather is warm and food easily available. They also are more on breeding mode now as others have stated as well.
