I am new to trapping and will not trap this year but looking to get into it next year. Any suggestions on where to start as far as supplies and gear goes thanks Craigslist, then Hoosier trapper supply. Join trapperman.com and make sure and use the search function before asking too many questions or they will be all over you. Try joining now and reading they will calm down come spring After season is over and be alot more likely to answer newbie questions without jumping down your throat. Have fun and be safe. There is alot of money to get started and little reward these days. Fur prices may explode soon If trump restores relations with Russia for us.

Go to hoosier trapper. Charlie and his crew are top notch and will get you ever going you need without up selling you anything. Charlie has some excellent videos to get you started. I don't know what you are after but once you get the first couple it is just replication and you have it. Best of luck. Trappeman.com is a great way to search and learn as mentioned.

trapperman.com been a long long time since I have been there but at one time it was the best place to get great info. Just take the time to figure out who knows what they are talking about vs those who like to type.
I should get rid of my gear. Kept it mainly to see if my kids wanted to trap. I think I will keep a few traps and clean out that crner of my garage

Good luck on your new adventure. It takes a special person to be a trapper. hard work ,not always, but usually low pay, but if you are that type of a person who enjoys it you will become not only a trapper, but one who knows nature like no others do. It will make you a better hunter, fisherman and above all else it will let you know the true meaning of being cold when you fall in a ditch with ice covering it at 5:00 in the morning while checking traps while using your 4 wheeler. Thank God I'm a trapper.
Really some of my fondest memories are from days I spent on the line. Good luck and listen to the old trappers that are willing to help you out with advise, but also don't be afraid to be your own man a either, you can learn a lot about trapping by the mistake you make along the way. Also join you local NTA chapter nor Fur Takers of America chapter. There will be members there willing to help you out.

I enjoy the trapping. Last year was my first year, and had a blast! It was like Christmas checking the traps everyday, but also like work checking the traps everyday. We must check them every 24 hours and for good reason. I can't stand coon or coyotes, but I certainly do not want them in a trap any longer than necessary.
I actually do not like to shoot the coons; they flop too much, and then sit up and look at me like, "Why are you doing this to me?" I'm a softy.
Hey, has anyone tried tying a coon (a dead one) to a tree and set foot traps around it to catch coyotes?

Hey, has anyone tried tying a coon (a dead one) to a tree and set foot traps around it to catch coyotes? If you did catch one this way it would be rare. Probably catch the heck out of Blue Tick or Walker, coon hounds.LOL I would use a dirt hole or flat set for catching coyotes using at least a 1-3/4 or larger coil spring foot hold trap. You can go to Utube and search coyote dirt hole or flat set and learn how to make the set, but that's just half of catching coyotes. Location and where to set the trap is the hard thing for a new trapper to learn. If you do try trap them this way my best advise I can give over the net is bed your trap rock solid so it does not tip or move if a coyote steps on a jaw and not the pan you want your trap not to move until he steps on the pan and double stake your traps or use the the cable disposable type stakes and pound them deep. Now days learning to basics of trapping is pretty easy with all the info on the internet, but still to be good and make good catches you got to get out there and learn mostly from your own mistakes. I got to warn you though, you catch one, your hooked for life trying to catch more.

I've used coon meat as bait for the hole.

I don't know of anything besides buzzards that eat 'coons. I'd use another type of meat in the hole.
