Anyone have much success calling in coyotes in the woods? I'm wanting to do more predator hunting this year, and have lots of public land around me with plenty of coyotes, but it's pretty much all mature timber.
I'm thinking the shotgun will be a better choice than a rifle. Problem I see will be getting them in sight before they slip down-wind.

I've always used mouth calls, with very little success, up until now. I have an electronic call on the way though, with a (advertised) 250 yd remote control. Also have a battery-powered decoy.

I haven't tried those. I may pick up a box if I can find them for my 10 gauge.

My e-caller came in the other day.. That thing is a lot of fun to play with. Has every sound you can imagine, even monkeys and elephants. I'm going to have fun scaring people with tiger roars and the such.
I'm hoping to go out and try some calling some night this week. I mounted a light on my 300 Blackout for now. I'll probably end up changing it over to my .223 soon, but I need to fine-tune the zero on my .223 first.

i,v called in a few in the woods i like sitting in treestands or along the downwind edge i believe coyotes will stay right inside the woodline more so than going out in the open it helps to have a little snow to

I like calling in the woods. It fun to set up where you are killing them inside 20 yards.

My e-caller came in the other day.. Well, I've been pretty disappointed with my caller, a Western Rivers 360. First trip out, it wouldn't come on at all, even though the batteries had only had about 5 minutes of use on them. Today, I put all brand new batteries in it, and it worked for about 15 minutes before quitting, saying low battery. I suspect a wiring problem, as the battery pack doesn't seem to snap into the call very securely. It did bring in a very nice gray fox in the HNF this morning before it quit, but when Adam1776 tried to shoot it his factory loaded Barnes cartridge failed to fire. So we headed home, disgusted with our equipment. The caller is now on it's way back to Cabelas, and I'm planning on getting a FoxPro to replace it.

Can't go wrong with a FoxPro. Let us know which model you pick up and if you have any success

I ordered a FoxPro Banshee.. It didn't have as many features as the Western Rivers call, but you get to choose what sounds it comes programmed with, it has a 3 year warranty, and it's made in the USA.

Back to hunting in the woods,I have a savage 24 in 223/20. Still haven't gotten it lined in but plan to use a Simmons 44mag on see thru mounts.Using the scope zero at 100yards for the 223 and open sights for the 20 with 4buck.Looks good on paper. When I get it set up I'll let you know.223 is rare but there's a lot of 222/20's out there. went out last nite on my 4th set i was huntin between 2 woods one was about 3 acres the oter was about 50 with about 30 yrd. strip cut through them with a little drainage ditch.i set up on the edge of the little one with the wind coming out of the big one in my face. something told me to get up close to the big woods i even walked up to it but changed my mind because i could see better down the strip. i set my foxpro banshee behind me about 30 yrds. the only complaint i got with the banchee is the remote i have to realy push the buttens reslly hard to get it to do any thing sometimes i have to push it 10 or fifteen times before it will cnange. any way i started off with luckybird ,a few min, then changed to the jackrabbit after about 10 min went to coyote vocals then went to the coyote in distress . thats when i seen the bright red eyes coming through the big woods he got rite to the ditch and that was the last i seen him. boy was i kicking myself in the ass for not setting up on the far side would of been a duck shot with shotgun
