Oh wow yeah. Sure would. My son told me he saw a black squirrel not too long ago on the upper side of our property. I might have to start hanging out around there in hopes of getting that one too.

There are black squirrel, grey squirrels and a few red squirrels where we deer hunt in Wi. I bought my buck tag and a small game license. Hopefully my can will have arrived by then. I have a .22 that is set up to shoot the .22 60g Aguilar Subsonic ammo. Bullseye69 threaded the muzzle so I'm all set. 8 or 9 months and still waiting.

I agree that it will gook fantastic mounted, but you'd better be sitting down when you get a price. Last time I checked a single squirrel cost as much or more than a buck shoulder mount.

Add 5 more for Team 1. All 5 from the same location and 4 were in the same tree; I was too close and almost looking straight up. 17 Mach 2. Guess they were hungry because they wouldn't stop cutting even after the crack of the Mach 2. Still plenty more in this woods! The dark, skinny one was the 2nd one shot and it landed in the creek in a puddle. Personal total is 7.

I hunted about an hour. Saw 6 or 7, and a couple fairly close. But, they were way up, and covered in branches, so not a single shot opportunity.

I am not a diehard squirrel hunter by any means. Just got a new gun I am trying to break in and it's a good excuse to get out. Believe me, after a long hard week of work, the last thing I WANT to do is be out in it any more! Lol.

Add 4 more for Team 1. Fox squirrels out of oaks and grays out of shagbark. Found them all in 3 trees. The shagbark was only about a foot in diameter and maybe 35' tall, but had 6 grays in it! Shot 1 and they kept right on cutting. Shot the second one and the remaining 4 all vacated at once. Tried a shot at one timbering away, but didn't connect. Personal total is now 11.

I went out today. Suffice to say now I know why guys use shotguns during early season with all the leaves on the trees. Might try it again in the morning for a bit before starting work.

Wanted to ask, how do you put up all your squirrels? I know my late FIL would freeze them in water like fish. Always wondered if you could vac pack, but would worry about the leg bones puncturing the bag. I have pressure canned them and it is the best way for me. Except that it takes a bunch to make a batch, unless a jar or two at a time.

Now with 2 hunts under my belt this year and encountering same issue, I may take a shotgun next time. I hate picking out shot too, but if I pressure can a batch, I can shred the meat right off the bone. I have read some guys say to use larger than typical size shot for pass thru's to avoid the trouble.

I bet that you could get one of those metal detecting pin pointers and that would alert you to any shot in the carcass.
I got too much on my plate to be as patient as I should be. It takes a few trips to the squirrel woods to get into hunting mode. As I get older and have more things on my plate I find that it is increasingly harder and harder to do.

Except that it takes a bunch to make a batch, unless a jar or two at a time. All vacuum-packed. The big, old ones to bake in soup in a baking dish get bagged separately. I bag up 2-3 young grays together for frying. I used to have trouble once in a while with bones puncturing the bags, but found good, cheap Mainstays bags at WalMart (ours quit handling those bags last year) and never got a leaky bag since. I had to order the last bags I got from OutofAir and I ended up getting a 100' roll. They seem to be holding up really well also. In addition to squirrels, deer, and rabbits, we buy other meats in bulk and I separate and vacuum pack into meal servings. I have the freezer full of packages of pork chops, steaks, brats, chicken breasts,...
