men, i lost my spot this past summer to development and i dont have any good places to go! i know i have the slough, kingsbury, jp, an lasalle available but i was hoping for something closer. i hunt with a longbow and do not take long shots and am not in pursuit of a huge trophy, i just want some meat in the freezer. if anyone knows of some wide open spaces that have serious deer problems let me know....im running out of time!

Where do you live? Huntinton and Salamonie both have good deer populations on them. Good luck finding a new spot. That would suck! Did they just start developing your ground, or are you being a slacker ;D and realizing you'd better get busy?

I know how you feel. I have hunted a farm for 24 years now, about 8 years ago the owner passed and his wife about 5 years ago. Now the 6 kids want to get rid of the farm ,none of them care about farming. 5 live out of town and state. So being the only one allowed to hunt there for 24 years ,this will be my last season, the farm will be a full of houses next spring. 165 acers gone! If anything is true this is, NOTHING LAST FOR EVER!! WELL EXCEPT GOD !

Kinsbury does allow it during bow season. Not sure about firearm season.

Let you in on a little known secret. Next time you visit one of the F&W areas pick up a booklet with maps of the Indiana Wetlands areas. Some are not large in size but are not hunted heavy in archery season but do hold deer and offer public access. There are two out by Laporte managed by Kingsbury. A rather large one down by Plymouth also. Don't overlook KKK F&W area either, north of hwy 8 park by the bridge campground and boat ramp head up river. A couple fire lanes cross that area plus the north south main ones on either side.

Newell I know what you mean. I lost my woods to leasing last year and have yet to find a new place. The real bad thing is that I got my brother-in-law to finally go deer hunting with me last year and now he is hooked with no place to hunt. We both have young sons and would like to have a place for a while that we can hunt so we can take them out there and let them get the fever.

I agree DDragon. They are tearing up a huge woods by my house as I type. They are going to put in half million dollar houses. I sure wish I knew where the people around here have their money trees hidden. I would like some of my own.

It's an endemic problem. It's almost impossible for someone who moves into an area and doesn't have connections. It's worse yet for someone who comes from a Still/Stalk hunt State who has never learned about Stands or Blinds - and has no one to teach him.
Unfortunately it usually comes down to Free-fire zones or "Pay to Play".

I agree Ironsights. I moved here from Ohio and don't have connections. I hunt blinds/stands, but the free fire zones pretty much scare me. I am leaning more to the pay to play, even though I don't have alot of money. I don't even know where to find them at either.

Guys I am in the same boat. Don't give up!!! I moved here over 10 years ago and pretty much gave up hunting, who did it hurt ... just me. Now my son is of the age where he can go hunting and all I have is Public Land. I asked for some advice hunting public land and two key points: Get away from the roads! (Woody posted an article stating that most hunter can be found 500 yards from the road). Second try going on a weekday or the weekend after opening weekend. Yup less chance for deer but also less hunters. Good Luck this season!

Not going to give up. But I am looking for more solutions/opportunities.
Maybe Hunters should have their own "welcome wagon" for newcommers to their town.
Too much of the sport is getting killed by the transient nature of the workforce and the difficulty integrating into the local hunting scene.
