I did a little scouting today at Mississinewa. I checked in at Station F, Area 6, and drove the gravel road back to the culdusac by the river. We parked and headed east for a half mile to where the river takes a bend to the south. The state has done an excellent job of planting corn, milo, and sunflowers. There were a lot of fresh tracks in the newly plowed fields. We saw some rubs and one good fresh scrape line. I like the looks of things back by the river, but it was hard to find a good stand sight for a climber. We didn't see any deer, but it looks promising. Does anyone have any experience up there or good advice on setups or locations. I had a tip to look for a big hill that looks like it is on private ground, but it is state owned, and the deer travel it a lot. I couldn't seem to locate it though. It may be a deer hunter's urban legend.

I've only deer hunted up there a few times and it was years ago. Some guys I know from Frankton go up there quite a bit. The one guy just goes during muzzleloader season and he has gotten a doe the last few yrs. But I am clueless on what areas.

daworz, what are the weekends like up there during early archery? I might have to work a hunt in up there too. I just have not been seeing many deer in my normal spots and getting pretty board with sitting in the stand looking at the same trees and a few tree rats.

Daworz, thanks for the reply, I will look for you tomorrow, as I plan on heading up in the morning to take my climber and bow for a walk. Duff, we were there Sunday, and it wasn't crowded at all. We saw only one parked truck in area six, and there were like 10 guys or so signed in. By my GPS we walked 2.86 miles scouting. I saw two hang on ladders that were empty, but didn't bump in to any other hunters. It was a gorgeous day, and that part of the river is nice. I plan on spending all day Tuesday and Wednesday up there for a change of scenery as well. We have a place down south that only four of us hunt, but I usually stay out of it until gun because my buddies are getting too old and achy to bow hunt any more. A neighbor is very good at watching the place and keeping things quiet. It also helps the renegades to push all of the deer on to us from other sections, so they are kind of safe and unpressured by constant hunting. It makes for a very fun opening weekend of gun. My friend that owns it makes us pass all the small bucks. Four bucks 140" or bigger have been taken since 2000, I was fortunate enough to take the first, a ten, 147, 187 #'s dressed. It jinxed me as I haven't seen anything close to that since. We stay in a primitive cabin, cook out of an iron skillet and dutch oven, and have a real good time. I just hate it when my butt hits that outhouse seat on a cold November morning! I also was drawn for both park hunts at Versailles, so I'll be traveling around the state quite a bit during gun season. The best part is, I have all but three days of from work!

Daworz, sorry about that. I spent Tuesday and Wednesday looking for the mystery hill. I think I found it in area six, but the property lines are confusing. I think that most of the ground adjacent to the reservoir and river is state ground, but it is kind of confusing because there are line fences still up. I found the hill, but it is adjacent to private ground that is posted. I also found an Army Corps of Engineers concrete survey stake on one property line that had a private posted sign within 20 yards of it inside of state ground close to a tree stand. I think guys put those up just to scare people off. I spent two solid days scouting and hunting, but didn't see any deer. It's nice to hunt during the week as I only saw one other hunter. Good luck Friday, I'm working for the next seven days straight, then I'm on vacation until December.

This is my fifth year hunting Mississinewa... THis has been the least crowded year (so far) that I have ever seen... That, I'm sure will all change as of next saturday when the orange coats start parading out there and sitting on the ground wherever they please... All in all it has been a fantastic year for deer sightings for me.. The doe population is HUGE this year.. I have never seen as many scrapes and rubs as I have seen this year... I am just not seeing many bucks, I have seen only one the entire year... Whatever you do though, stay away from the CR 950 area... We reported road hunting out the wazoo last year and the DNR busted I think like 11 people for it... Its bad over in that area.. The CR 700 area is ALWAYS a big producer of big bucks.. Ive got a ladder with my name in that area,, if you see it you are more than welcome to sit in it... Look for the Matt Gamble name on it and your good to go.. Best of luck to ya and look for me if you get a chance.. Im in a full size chevy 2500 2004 Silverado.. Another thing I forgot to mention is this.. There is still TONS of corn up around the property, lots more than is usually up this time of the year.. This is drastically affecting deer sightings Im sure... It will also SCREW alot of gun hunters if the majority of it is still standing Saturday...

Sup rockster!!! I've hunted that area around 700 and it is looking nice this year. The best buck activity i've seen this year is around jalapa and francis slocum trail, usually it's never really been that good until this year. I use to hunt 950 and 925, but the rabbit dogs run that place to death it must be all them grassy strip fields and not to even mention the coon hunters at night. Hey rockster i'm hunting on CR 1000 on the southeast side of the RES and feel free to jump into one of my stands just look for the address because me and my friends are the only one's from kokomo he man good luck to ya peace out!!!!!

I know this is an old thread but does anyone know which area at Mississinnewa has the biggest deer kill each year? Since me parent live close to there I am thinking it might be a good place to take my Son for the youth hunt. I would have not intentions on stealing anyones spot as I would not be hunting there after the youth season if I even do that. Feel free to PM me if you would like.

Mississinewa does not allow does to be taken except during archery season/mz season unless they have changed the rules for this year, which I doubt. Sorry but you will have to look elsewhere for the youth hunt.

Just because they don't allow does to be taken during regular firearms doesn't mean they don't allow youth hunts there. Nearly all FWAs have the same rules for taking does and a lot of them still allow hunters during the youth season.
