IMO, too many people don't understand deer vocals and it will soon bite us all in the butt. Before you rattle or grunt or snort/wheeze you need to why and when before even thinking about it. All calls are good at certain times, all are out of place at other certain times.

I asked on another hunting board how many using snort wheeze calls have ever heard one in the wild. Very very few have or course there were the ones that claimed to have he4ar it 20 times or some thing. Ive been in the woods for 28 or so years and I MIGHT have heard it from a live deer once.

I dont know how good the can calls are for bucks but if your looking to harvest a yearling then it sure does the trick young deer come running to this call. I imagine a Snort wheeze might bring in a buck looking for a fight and im not sure about the roar i have the primos buck roar and i only like it because it has a good regular grunt which u can get great volume out of. I called a buck in from 300 yrds with it anda few this year so i guess i'd havt to say a grunt is the call i would go with.......or the kruncher from hunter specialties lol

Doe estrus bleat via "the can".... ... :)during the last week of earily archery season , i called in a 8-pointer that was heading away(70 yards) from me ,only could get him to pass at fifty yards, i would have shot if he got to within forty yards and if it was good shot, first time i seen a response with a call... but it worked once!.. ................turkey scout

Ive heard about 5 different bucks do it this year and total I have heard it done by those 5 bucks about 20 times just this year. I have only heard the growl, roar what ever you want to call it probably 3 or 4 times ever. I will say this though this year is the most vocal I have every heard the deer around I hunt be. They have responded well to rattling, grunt and snort wheeze. WHEN it was right like mentioned above calls can be effective.

I agree about the snort wheeze. I heard it the first time in 35 years this year. It was made by a button buck that was chasing a doe. He was grunting every step when they came by. He was not walking when he snort wheezed. When the doe stopped, he did to and that's when he did it. I thought about taking the doe but I didn't want to frustrate the little guy. LOL

I've been hunting about the same number of years,28, and that's one more time that I've heard a snort weeze from a deer...Same goes for turkey hunting...these guys go out and hammer these calls for 15 minutes at a time...lol...how many hens you heard yelping as much as many hunter call..?....Less is more..animals aren't as stupid as we think...they can identify individuals by their unique vocalizations....when you blow a call, first and foremost they know immediately it's an outsider, not a vocalization from local animal they're familiar with..so they're cautious right off the bat IMO...then if you keep hammering it, or blow it/run it out of context with the situation...the suspicion doubles...and within a few minutes or seconds the gig is up...Use them sparingly and in context with what's happening...grunt calls and such do seem to work best in the Rut phase or pre-rut, but not enough for me to use them everytime I hunt... when the situation presents itself, I will I use one..as for turkey calls, low subtle feeding purrs, and maybe a series of yelps every 20-30 minutes if that....Sparingly, most call way too much...I've hunted and taken turkey without ever making one call..couple decoys, on a field they like to feed on during certain times in the Spring will take a turkey more times than not..no calls even needed if you do your homework..

Ten Four.. the only time I get agressive with a turkey call is when Tom is hung up with a bunch of hens. I then do a lot of cutting and challenge the boss hen.
