I have NOT seen deer in places where I always USED to see deer. So... I went different places, and whaddya know? There they are!!!
I have a theory... that Darwinism works on a micro level when we hunt. The deer that are susceptible to the tactics we use... get killed (or educated) over a few years. The deer that are not susceptible to our tactics survive, and train the next generation.
Deer hunting 101 rule #1. When you think you got 'em figured out... better figure again!
I am lucky and hunt public ground. A LOT of it. I make a point to explore new ground EVERY year. it seems that the NEW places are the producers for a few years. Sometimes it takes 8-10 years for them to go thru another cycle of deer that are susceptible to my tactics.
If you're not seeing deer, quit doing the same old dance.
Sometimes you gotta make your own luck guys.

Having only 40 acres of private ground to hunt really narrows the ability to change tactics!

I agree and disagree with "your" tactics lol
Ive been hunting the same 280 acres for almost 20 years. I have stands that produce deer within bow range EVERY time I sit them. One particular stand I call The Sure Nuff stand has been in the same tree for that entire 20 years. Ive put 7 people in it and all have killed deer out of it,. At one point when I kept a good log I never sat in it without having a deer within 20 yards. On the other hand, I have stands I place and am successful one year only to never see a deer out of it other years. I think food sources, crop rotation, logging, cattle in pastures, natural growth of understory, trees falling over trails, all kinds of things attribute to deer changing permanent habits

Having only 40 acres of private ground to hunt really narrows the ability to change tactics! No one ONLY has 40 acres of private land to hunt. We ALL have tens of thousands of acres of public land to hunt. Of the 53 deer I have killed in my life, only a few were on private ground. the rest were all public land deer. It's out there. And it's not ALL hunted to death. Jabba

Of the more than 90 deer I have harvested all were on private land. To each his own! I did however shoot the bull pictured in my avatar on public land.

jabba - was wanting to ask you a question and I really hope you dont take it the wrong way ....
You mentioned in your other thread that you were basically walking around public property trying to "stir up" deer for your buddies who were hunting in the area.
Did you give thought to what others hunting in the area might think of you walking around?
I do not hunt public ground so I really dont care one way or the other but I often hear folks talk about hunting public ground in a bad way. Seems to me that having a guy walking around on the third day of firearms season "stirring up" the deer would have the potential to not sit well with others hunting the area?
Just curious ....

I very rarely see other hunters. When I do... they are often gutting deer I stirred around. I don't hunt horns. I hunt meat. I am the first to admit that I dumbed into that big buck this year. Nothing I say is fact. Only opinion. I hunt public land, and I hunt the places that other people are usually not willing to go to. I am not saying that public land is for everyone. I'm saying that it's an OPTION. NO ONE is limited to 40 acres of private land. If that's your choice... COOL!! But whining about not seeing deer is what it is. Whining. I was sharing how I deal with the slow times. When I ain't seeing deer, I go somewhere else. You don't like the advise... don't take it. I get hunted on sometimes on public land. it's PUBLIC land. In fact, 2 weekends in a row there were 4 surveyors stomping around our hunting spot. It sucked. But it is what it is. If I walk past a guy in a tree stand, if he doesn't get all y about it and leave... it's likely he'll see deer in my wake. It's not like I am STOMPING around thru the woods. I am still hunting, and working the wind. Moving slow. I kill a lot of deer, and I pass on a lot of deer. I try to help my hunting group, that don't kill a lot of deer themselves an opportunity. Kids, guys mentoring kids, and crippled guys all hunt with us, as well as people testing the hunting waters. I get a lot more enjoyment out of THEM killing deer than doing it myself. My opinion is worth what you paid. And I don't care what other guys think of me really. I am trying to share my methods with others. I guess I could keep it to myself, but that'd make me like the rest of the world, and I don't want to be that selfish. Swilk...if i come off as defensive, i apologize. I am not offended by your comment. But I am sure there are others that think of me just that way. Because I don't hunt like THEY do... I do it wrong. There are a lot of ways to get it done. Jabba

I used to hunt a piece of private property that I did not have exclusive rights to .... and one of the other hunters insisted on "still hunting" every time he hunted.
I can remember my frustration ..... so glad I do not have to deal with that anymore.
He had just as much right to be there as I did .... and I never said a word to him.

Not whining about anything just stating a fact. And if you knew my situation {and you don't} I am limited to the 40 acres.

[quote author=kodiak50 board=deerhunting thread=40242 Not whining about anything just stating a fact. And if you knew my situation {and you don't} I am limited to the 40 acres.[/quote] Point taken. I guess it's POSSIBLE you're stuck on 40 acres. But I know that I hunted for years with my crippled brother in a wheel chair. We got him into the woods. He was a post polio amputee. I have pushed him in his chair 1/2 mile into the woods, and he was a 300 + lb man. I bought a quad for him to be able to get in the woods. He had access to the access trails in Martin State Forest. If you're access is tough... come hunt with me. I'll get you in the woods and try to get a deer to wander by you. Jabba

Hmmmm, so you're saying be flexible, have multiple stands, and properties, scout out where the deer are and their patterns???!!! Take into account different food sources, bedding areas, terrain, weather, and environmental changes??!!! What a novel idea!!! This is not my first rodeo, this is my experience this year in combination with colleagues from across the state...We have killed several hundreds of deer over decades in at least a dozen different counties from St. Joe to Dearborn Co. and I'm telling you that the deer are not where they SHOULD be! I don't know why...but, judging from the survey me and my hunting friends are not alone. I'll be interested to see what the state harvest numbers will be.

jabba,
I thought your post was right on. I hunted 2 new spots this year and put 2 in the freezer. Some people just struggle with good conversation. Nice job on your success and willingness to help the next guy. Public ground isn't the enemy like alot make it out to be. Alot of opportunity to be had for someone willing to go the extra mile.

I think it is the way in which your "advice" was presented that is getting people a little stirred up. Kind of a know it all tone. And since you just started the Jaba's brag thread a few days ago, I think I can see how the "expert hunter" could be construed!
Personally, I think hunter7x is a little more on track!
