Also found out the condition where there is no sign of testicles is testicular atrophy, the deer would have never breed.

Practical Odd that you have posted this about (a stag buck) that you've taken, not trying to jack your thread, but have a friend that has taken what I think is also a stag buck. He took is buck a couple weeks ago. I just recieved a pic of the buck to post on the site to share with you guys. And your post inspired me too get his pic posted. Gary's deer is still in velvet and had testicles but no scars that he found.

I shot a decent 8pt several years ago on thanksgiving that was still in full velvet. When I shot it I thought it just had a lot of mass. Boy was I suprised to see it was velvet. Turns out it had been shot by a pellet gun right in the family jewels. I found a pellet inside the skin on the inside of his rear leg.

saltydog,
EHD affected deer will sometimes still have velvet. Woodmaster killed one in Illinois a few years back that still had some velvet on it. Not full velvet like this buck, but quite a bit.
Was his hooves sloughed any? Weight OK?

I didnt know that EHD could effect them in this way .... the bucks with testicle injuries I always called cactus bucks.

I always called them deer with injured testicles. Only a few of them will grow a cactus type rack.
Looks like this tgread has several issues gong on. The first looks to be a 6 month old deer, probably with testicle that haven't become visable yet. It's a brocket not a stag.
Mature deer still in velvet can be found fairly commonly, and fir several reasons.

My guess is that it would depend on what stage the antler growing was in when the testicle was injured that would determine whether the rack would be normal with velvet or a full blown cactus rack. I have heard that some if these bucks keep the same set of antlers through the next year or two.. My guess on the button in question is that his testicles had not descended yet. Interesting subject....

What is unusual about the button buck? May just be the picture, but I'm not seeing it. The other rack in velvet is just cool. See, we don't new to hunt deer September 1st to shoot deer in velvet.
