The IN DNR is leasing OUR public land, 300 prime acres in Parke county for hunting.
Going rate is $1200 for 3 days (minimum length) including use of the "lodge"
This information is publicly available or has been confirmed with IN DNR officials.
This is just not right!

No, it isn't right for the INDR to lease out public land that your tax dollars were used to preserve public lands. I am just wondering when the US Forest Service start selling public property [example]: The Hoosier National Forest sold to a foreign country like Red China, to pay down their nation debt owned to them. They would come in and strip all the natural resources and mine it to death, while placing "NO HUNTING" signs within it. Indiana wouldn't be the only state either!! |

This is no "LEASE"!!!
You are renting a cabin and land goes with this....
Anyone can rent this if they have a reservation !!
BTW ..... A lot folks rent this and ride the horse trials they have there!!!

What about charging fees to enter state parks? The fee's are more justifiable being they have to hire employee's to mow, work the gate, security, maint etc. so they fee of $5.00 i gladly pay to have a clean, mowed State Park to visit. |

They also have the right to charge people for staying in their lodges on their various properties. As far as I can tell, that's what most of the charges are in this case. It's not leasing public hunting land. It's an experience that includes lodging. That's the way I understand it anyway. Here is the link. It actually sounds like a great thing for a family getaway! "Seasonal hunting packages available" So it is mentioned but hardly featured. I could actually see myself taking advantage of this...not for hunting though. |

I see nothing wrong with renting the lodge. I just don't like them renting out the land. There are lots of DNR properties where cabins are available for rent, but this is the first I've seen where you get exclusive access to the entire property. Hard to see how that would be considered "public" land.
What does the DNR do if someone hikes the trails without paying $1200? Write them a ticket? I doubt it. I wonder how they keep out other hunters..

Pay hunting doesn't surprise me. None of those things locks others out though. I can rent a cabin at Brown County S.P., but that doesn't keep everyone else off the public use trails, lakes, etc. |

Here's what they had to say about the "hunting package". Thank you for your interest in Covered Bridge Retreat. Hunting is allowed at Covered Bridge Retreat when the full retreat is reserved. The full retreat consists of reservations of both the lodge and the campground rentals, a 20% discount will apply. A hunting package must be requested by calling our office after your reservation is made. Currently there is a 3 night minimum when making reservations. Availability and reservations and can be made at www.camp.in.gov, or by calling the reservation system at 1-866-622-6746. |
