I'm working around the welders schedule so we haven't got much done on the stove for several days. We spent a little bit of time on it tonight. The door opening was cut and started framing in around it. We thought it would be better to have some thicker steel to attach the hinges and door to. It's slowly taking shape. I think I'm going to try and forge a large round file into a part for the damper. I've never done any forging so it should be interesting. I'll try to build a small forge out of fire bricks and see how it goes.

I also got two mandrel bend 45 degree elbows for the chimney in the mail today. I need to get them flared out on one end.

We are going to use a piece of square tubing for a damper under the door. There will be a plate inside of it to control the air flow. Today I tried to do some forging for the first time ever. I took a round file and made it into the handle for the damper. I used some fire brick, a piece of car exhaust pipe, and the blower from an inflatable snowman. My pile of scrap wood got soaked with rain so I had to weed out a few low quality osage staves for the fuel. I enjoyed heating and shaping the metal. Everything went pretty smooth. I singed some hair off my arm and a piece of slag caught my shirt on fire. I think I'll set up a permanent forge up off the ground sometime. I flattened out the bottom for the handle and flattened out the center part of the rod so the plate can attach to it. After it cooled off I cut the bottom off and rounded the edges out. I'm going to put some wood scales on it next.

Scrub-buster, I love this kind of "barnyard engineering" !
Getting down to the basics of what you really need to get a job done, and making do with available tools and supplies as much as possible, is REAL practical engineering.
We used to laugh about it in the tool room of the defense plant where I worked. Sure, we could do wonderfully precise machining and check our work to extreme tolerances, but we knew "almost any idiot could do this with the help of a couple million dollars worth of machinery". Just about every toolmaker in there had great respect for the guys out there who got the job done with a hammer and a screwdriver and some on-the-spot DIY tools.
I remember one of our welders who was on a mission to Haiti, and was amazed when his VW bus had a muffler that rusted out way beyond repair. He took it to a local general repair shop, and a guy there took a what looked like a three-pound hammer and a basic acetylene torch and most of a 55-gallon drum that had some material already missing, and completely manufactured a replacement in a few hours that fit well and lasted, through the rest of his mission at least, with no problems.

Thanks Russ. I get a lot of satisfaction out of making stuff myself. I put some osage scales on the handle. The epoxy wasn't set up enough for me to shape them. That will have to wait until Monday.

I'm thinking that there's not much that you can't do scrub.

I checked those stoves out Woody. I went with the propane tank for the smaller diameter and I had some old tanks already. Those look cool though.

I'm thinking that there's not much that you can't do scrub. Thanks. I have a lot of help with this project. We haven't got any work done on it for a while. My welder had a death in the family and he had to go to Texas for a while. He should be back this week so hopefully we can get it finished up.

My welder friend is back and we are working on the stove again. We got the door frame enclosed and the door attached. I think we figured out how to use the wrench for the latch.

I could be way off here but seems like you may want a brace of some kind to keep that door from warping

We got a little more work done on the stove. Progress has slowed down lately. We put some square tubing in the front for a damper. I'm going to make a plate to fit inside of it to regulate the air flow. It might cut off an inch or so off. It looks to long. We did a test fire to see how it worked and to burn some of the paint off. Everything looked good. I was burning pine pallet boards and was surprised at how long they lasted with the door shut. It put off a lot of heat. It won't take much of a fire to heat my small work shop.

...progress slowed down a bit? Man, I'm always in the slow mode. When my projects slow down more, it's like a jet landing on a carrier. You should feel wonderful about what you have done here. Thanks for showing us.

Its not because of me. We work on it when the welder feels like staying past quitting time and working on it. He's been busy lately so we haven't got much done.

Hey scrub how is your heater working ?? With this warmer weather you may not have needed it much !!!! I have started another waste oil burner, I will post the pics when when Im done. I brought it home from work a couple weeks ago. For the most part it's done. I still need to install the damper plate. I went with a different handle for it. I've got the stuff to clean it up and paint it. I just haven't had the time to work on it. Last night I picked up a free piece of concrete board for a heat shield between the stove and the wall. I should have about everything I need for the chimney also. I'm finishing up a project this weekend so I should get to work on installing the stove soon. I've got a stock pile of tiny firewood ready to go.

I'm trying to finish the stove before winter decides to get here. I removed all the old paint with a flap sander wheel. I gave it 2 good coats of high temperature paint. After I install the damper I'll give it a final coat. It's starting to look like a stove.
