Well I reckon that I need to start saving up for a .22 with a scope . what is the average price range for a .22 , I'll be checking OUT Bass , cabelas , gander and Walmart you only need to look at one, the ruger 10/22 unless you dont want an auto gun but if you are hunting for a bolt gun there are lots of choices.

Normally you must buy the scope separately which costs vary. Not sure Walmart in your area has a Ruger American or a Savage bolt action in .22 LR, but don't think they come with a scope. Several individuals, on other shooting forums, have these brand of bolt action rifle, and like them. Other than buying a new rifle you might check out "gently" used rifles.

There has been .22 ammo in all my local gun shops that I visit, for some time now.
mossberg500, first thing you gotta figure, is what's your budget. For a new gun, plus a scope[and bases and rings], you are looking at$250+. And the "+" can jump a bunch, depending on what you are looking at.

Back in 2009, I bought a Marlin Model 60 .22 LR just to have on hand, but I really don't use it much except for shooting at targets & empty cans. When I bought the rifle, I also got a free box of Federal brand box of 550 .22 shells with the purchase. Guess we'll never see that again. I own a CZ 452 AMERICAN .22 rifle and my Brother has a Ruger 77/22 bolt action rifle with a Leupold scope mounted on it, but I have a Weaver 3-9 power model on my CZ. My Brother hunts Squirrels about 5 to 12 days each Squirrel Season and I bet he hasn't fired his Ruger more than 50 times. A couple years ago I was considering purchasing an Anschutz model 1710 D KL in .22 LR, but when .22 ammo became hard to come by I placed this purchase on "hold" for awhile.

I put a cheap simmons 22mag scope on it, normally im a little more picky about my optics, but it holds zero and kills squirrels. Would have got a rifleman patch at an appleseed if i had remembered to tighten the scope down. Lol

mossberg500, how far are you from Rensselaer? There is a store there called Jerry's gun shop. Over the years, he's had some of the best prices of anyplace in NW Indiana. He doesn't trade real well, but his straight cash sales are at the top. You might check him out.

Bolt actions are more accurate from my understanding , so I believe that I will be going with the bolt action

mossberg500, if you are going with a bolt gun, and are on a budget, I'd like to suggest a Marlin XT22, either clip or tube fed. Mount a Simmons 22 mag 3-9x rimfire scope on top, and you should have a great little squirrel gun for in the $250-275 range. Get ahold of 2-3 different boxes of .22 ammo to test the rifle with. I'm real partial to CCI SV LR, and use it in all 4 of my .22s. Not wanting to start something with others here, but if you go the 17 hmr route, better make sure every shot is a head shot, cause they do too much damage to suit me with anything but a perfect head shot. JMHO

I am using a shotgun also. Can't place a .22 bullet the way I want to anymore. I have a 20 ga. English Fowler flintlock that will be put to the test this year. I have been using the caplocks but the flinter will get some woods time this year.

The Marlin 60 is a great auto loader. My son's rifle will almost shoot with my Browning T22. Probably would if he would buy better ammo. I agree with Jon Snow on used. There is always a bunch of .22s at any gunshow. TIP look at the screw heads on a used gun. If they are buggered up the chances of Bubba Gunsmith increase. Most of the time you can get the rifle and scope for less than a new gun. BTW my wife does not like shotgunned squirrels.
