Pickling? I saw this in FB and thought I’d share it here.. . Great, another way to save a buck for the companies but screw the consumers.

Picked green beans, lettuce, tomatoes, zucchini, and cucumbers so far. The new garden bed has settled about 2 inches so far. No surprise. So far no deer and any other animals.

Squash, zucchini, and peppers everyday. Beans are on, but not full. Daughter has 3 heads of cabbage in the raised bed for the county fair. As of now they are big as a basketball and still have 8 days to go. One day last week we picked 13.5lbs of zucchini and squash off of 6 plants.

One small doe has figured out our fishing string fence. She gets in every night and eats some leaves off our pumpkis. I ordered some fence off Amazon. In the meantime, I've got a radio under that half barrel. Hopefully the local country station will keep her out.

I don't think the radio is working. I just had 2 deer right by the fence. I know one thing that will scare them away, a half naked redneck sprinting across the yard while banging a pan with a ladle and blowing a rape whistle. They nearly turned inside out trying to get away.

We had to resort to the fence that buckbuster13 recommended. I think the deer were dancing to country music while they ate our pumpkins. No new damage since we put it up. I have a feeling a lot of does will be harvested from our place this fall.

I've got a very large pumpkin patch going, several hundred plants. The local deer hit them one night several weeks ago and chewed & damaged probably 20% of the plants.
I've since put in stakes with flags every 15' or so around the perimeter and have been spraying them with Home Depot deer & rabbit repellant. It's been working and plants look great. Fingers crossed.

Just finished the sweet corn processing for the year. 103 bags (roughly 55 dozen) cooked, blanched, cut off the cob and in the freezer. Best corn crop in years, probably another 5-10 dozen to eat fresh and give away, I have already given about 10 dozen away. Tomatoes and salsa are up in a week or so.

I can not keep the deer out of our garden. They have been busting holes through the fence we put up. I can't see any damage other than 2 pumpkin leaves being ate. I patched all the holes and ran a heavier string about 1' high and across the top to hold the fence up. I also used stakes to hold the fence down all the way around. We need to figure out something better for next year.

I came home today and they have tore down one entire side. I only use 1, about 6 inches of the ground, but coons are my only problem. For deer I would try 2,1 about 6 inches up and the other about knee high. I bought my charger at Rural King for 30ish dollars,it will charge a half mile of fence and it really has some "zap"!

I would use a electric one vs battery unless the power source isn’t nearby. They make all types of electric fence now days also!

I can run electric to it. I want one with a "permanent damage" setting. I'm done fighting these deer.

Get one that will protect a large area - say 25 miles. I'd just do 2 wires, one about 6" off the ground and one about 36" high. I have heard it said to put a palm sized piece of aluminum foil on the top wire, then put a teaspoon sized piece of peanut butter on it. The deer will lick it to get to the peanut butter and it will zap them pretty good. I would make durn sure that there was an insulated gate on it, or make sure everyone knows how to to turn the fence off to get past it.
I had one that was rated for 1/4 mile and only had about 75' of wire on it. It would kill squirrels and blackbirds if the grass was wet. That was 3 wires, 6" 24" and 36". It was to block off an area that was about 25 feet wide between the house and the cyclone fence. Any grass or weed that grew and touched it was burnt back. No weed/grass trimming needed.

Today's pickins, this will probably the last of the cucumbers for pickling the vines are stating to dry up. But will switch over to canning tomatoes and tomato juice later this week. Have about 6 more cantaloupe to pick in a couple days, they are about done as well. Also got the honey bottled up, I only pulled 15 frames so that there would be enough for the bees too make it through the winter
