I loaded up some more 22 Hornet. I was thinking about going out this morning, but had a few more things planned to do instead. Waiting for cooler weather too.

Here are 2 more to be added for team 3 that made the mistake of showing up in the big oak tree in my backyard. Time for some cooler weather. To dang hot to be in the woods. This is the oak tree where the squirrels thought they were safe as you can see them both laying on the ground. I may or may not have shot them when I opened the patio door. 😉

I went and sat in a deer stand on a friend's property yesterday evening but alas only a single grey squirrel joined the party and after taking four shots at him he only skittered down the tree (injured leg probably) and went and hid. I didn't find him when I looked later.

Please add 1 more to Team 1. A bit too windy this evening for me. Spotted 4, but could only locate this one long enough for a shot. Personal total is now 16. Had two deer walk in on me while I was waiting on the squirrels to move into shooting position. They skeedaddled when I shot that gray!

The pig-nut hickory was full of squirrels this morning probably 7 or 8, ended up pulling out 3. Should of been a full bag limit, but my aim was off on a couple of them , or maybe shooting to fast. Got to love it when they are in one tree and land close together when you shoot them out. The third one is just out of frame about 20 ft.

Add 1 more for team 3. I guess some people on here might question or wonder why I try and shoot so many squirrels. One of the reasons is I enjoy squirrel hunting and spending time in the woods which is right out my back door. The other reason is I have family members, relatives and close friends that hunted for years, but with their age and some have health problems, can’t get out and enjoy the sport anymore. They are always happy and appreciate it when I bring them some already cleaned squirrels that they can fix and enjoy. As I keep getting older, ( 74 ) I do hope someday when I get to the point where I can’t enter the hunting woods anymore, that my sons or grandchildren will do the same for me. Happy hunting my friends.

Please add 1 more for Team 1. Way too windy this morning. Got lucky and one came down low enough as it was leaving the tree for me to get the scope on him. Personal total is now 17. Also forgot the picture till it was already cleaned and in the zip lock. Kept this tail because it was so full and fluffy. Might just dry it and hang it from the truck's rearview mirror. 😄

Add these 5 squirrels for team 3. What a beautiful morning it was to be in the woods. I love hunting when the woods is quiet with no wind blowing and you can spot a squirrel making a limb bounce or hear cuttings dropping down while they are chopping on a nut. Two of the squirrels I shot this morning still had a hickory nut in their mouth when they hit the ground. Guess it was their last meal. How do you carry your squirrels while hunting? With a game bag vest or do you have another method you use? My Dad showed me this trick when I tagged along with him when I was knee high to a grasshopper. He would cut a small stick from a branch, put a couple of slits in the squirrels foot, then slide the stick through it and use it as a handle. If you look close at the picture, you can see I still do it this way.

Yep,that’s pretty much the way I do it but I make the stick long enough to pass through two belt loops. that way, I have both hands free, and I never have to lay the squirrels down. I have lost squirrels before because I laid them down while pursuing other squirrels, and could not find where I left them. lesson learned.

Thats the way my uncle taught my brother and I to carry our squirrels On a squirrel hunting trip in 1985 with my brother in law and Mr Johnson a Black preacher in West Virginia, as I had cut such a twig as you posted. I ran a razor sharp blade from a case xx muskrat knife trough the squirrels foot and my fore finger on my left hand, ending that days hunt with a trip to the ER for stitches . Upon arrival back at camp those there that were there were teasing me about taking my knife away if I was going to cut myself again. Thats when Mr Johnson handed me what he called a squirrel pin. I still have it today and take it with me on every squirrel hunt. Here is a pic of my squirrel huntin tote. A WWII canteen and belt givin to me by my wifes grandfather and a Vietnam era pouch from a cousin.

I have a D-ring with 550 cord slip knots hanging off it. I slip the loop over a tail and clip it on my belt

Omegahunter,
I like the idea of your loop system. Did you make that carrying stick where you have your squirrels hanging from?

Omegahunter, I like the idea of your loop system. Did you make that carrying stick where you have your squirrels hanging from? Yep. Cut the walking stick from a Hickory sapling and the carry handle from the same sapling. One string for the hanging loop and five strings to make up the squirrel-leg loops. Slip knot in the end of each of those and then all 5 laid together to tie into a single overhand knot through the loop on the wood handle. Drill a hole through the top of the walking stick and whittle one end of the handle down to go into the walking stick. I usually carry the squirrels by the handle and put it into the walking stick when stopping at a place to watch or rest for a while. Keeps the squirrels off the ground and helps the walking stick not to fall over propped up on a tree. I have, on occassion, stuck the handle through a belt loop and let them dangle from my side. But I usually get a lot of blood on my pants leg that way.

The ground here under a few White Oak trees is flat out covered with acorns. I need to get out if it isn't thick fog in the morning I may sneak out and take the Mossberg 151(b).

Add one more for Team 3. Sitting under a tree seemed to work tonight. He came in from behind and sat eating nuts where I couldn't see up in a tree. Then a gray groomed itself about 30 ft straight above me and came down the trunk of the tree I was sitting against. That squirrel would have been shot if shooting straight up was safe! It made it to about a foot above me, then saw me and got nervous. After checking me out a second time (still only a foot away!) it climbed to the other side of the tree and disappeared. Well this guy had finished eating and was on his way back to where he came from when the gray tipped him off and he sat and chattered at me from a branch nearly behind me. I had to maneuver a bit to get the gun sights on him. There were some leaves and a small twig in the way, but I could tell they weren't going to affect the shot. Well I underestimated how far out this guy was leaning and the bullet hit the guts. So now I had to go over and finish him off..... Which I normally do anyway because I almost never make an instant kill shot. Skinning him was pretty hard, my very sharp knife wouldn't make the first cuts. I'm guessing he was middle aged based on his size. Addendum: Tried to have him fried for a campfire, and unfortunately he was too tough. Some local kitties got to enjoy what we couldn't though!
