Son has a 2003 f150 5.4l. It started leaking good bit of oil. Finally got a chance to climb under it and dang it is a mess. Mainly passenger side and found this open ended tube. To me looks like it should be connected. Almost looks like dipstick tube but wrong side. It is same side as transmission dipstick but about 1/3 the diameter. Going for some internet searching but I know we have some ford fanatics and mechanics that may know if this is normal or not. Same area just a few more things to look at. Any ideas?

Figured I would highline the tube. Just on the rear inside line of the passenger side wheel below the battery.

Been working on Fords for 30 years. My advise would be follow the tube above the transmission and see if it comes back to transmission vent. Trans vent tube should be clipped into a bracket at the top of bell housing. That is the only other tube I can think of on those old ones. Those old 5.4's were notorious for cover gasket leaks and/or headgaskets leaking oil.

My 99 F150 had bad gaskets, I had them replaced and they blew again...twice. I gave up on that truck after that. Good luck Duff I wouldn't be surprised if you had a gasket leak somewhere but I'm not the mechanic you're looking for.

I can stumble through some things but I know my limits

Is the dripping oil in the tube black or red? The oil is black and he uses a quart a tank of gas. It is a mess. Fix or repair daily....should known better! I don't think the tube is actually dripping oil, just confused me this morning

I don't think the tube is actually dripping oil, just confused me this morning I've always found the Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge vs etc... amusing. I truly think most, not all, problems are specific to a given vehicle. Here's a rundown of vehicles that I can recall associated with me and my family: 1984 Olds Ciera - JUNK! Parents bought it new and then gave it to me. Complete 100% P.O.S. 1985 Chevy truck - Ok, but had problems. Mom had several Olds 88 & 98's. Never a problem that I can remember. I had two 1997 F150's and never spent a dime on either. 1994 Dodge truck - not flawless, but better than the 85 Chevy 1996 Tacoma - no problems 2004 Tundra - one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. 2015 Duramax - Flawless 2019 Duramax - money pit. Constant DEF and emissions issues. Parents have had several Toyota Avalons and never had a single problem. 1996 Dodge truck - solid, very few problems 1998 Accord - junk. Got rid of it within two years. Friday afternoon special? Dad has a 2000 Chevy truck that is about to fall apart from age, but runs like a top. The in-laws have had several Cadillacs and one problem after another with every one of them. That's all I can remember right now.

I could imagine you were quite confident going in to that 2019. I'm sure that was quite the letdown.

It's almost setup to fail now. One sensor out of range or false reading, one drop of moisture, one wire pulled tight in a harness, corrosion, etc you name it, and nothing but problems waiting to happen. I see it every day on big trucks.

I have never been much on trading trucks, when I'm done with one, it's pretty well used up. I have only had 4 trucks in 35 years of being licensed,3 Ford,1 Chevy. We had a Dodge Caravan I got rid of after 1 year because it was an absolute lemon, so I'm kinda soured on Dodge. Although I have never owned or driven a Toyota, I have several friends that have them and I have never heard anything bad about them. I might look into one whenever my current truck is "used up".
