Senate bills are starting to appear. Nothing for Natural Resources yet but there are some interesting bills involving firearms and even regulation of Tannerite. I'd expect many more bills including the budget to appear this week and the rest of the month. iga.in.gov/legislative/2017/bills/Jack

The Natural Resources Advisory Council will be meeting on January 11th to discuss a proposal from the Division of Fish & Game which will increase license fees for many licences. The increases are needed to help fund the Division. www.in.gov/nrc/files/item_5_ac_jan_2017.pdfJack

GROUSE - I'm often asked this question and the answer is that I was born a rabbit hunter but grew into a grouse hunter. There's a lot to be said for pheasant hunting but grouse will always be my favorite. The work the state is doing in our forests right now will help but the vast majority of private lands are not being managed properly and don't get me started on the Hoosier National Forest. We may see the grouse come back (a group of grouse was spotted this year in the Hoosier Hardwood Experiment) but we won't hunt them again in my life in Indiana. The plans are already set up for reintroduction of birds if we can get some decent habitat in about 10-15 years.

I believe Pheasants Forever in conjunction with Crooked Creek Conservation Club is planning a bird hunt in early March. Contact Ray Shepard at Atterbury Fish & Wildlife Area for info.

I have a friend in the market for a German Shorthair pup. Anybody know of any available litters? Thanks.

Go to the forestry office of Morgan-Monroe (and any public property) and talk to the folks who work there. They can help you zero in on the right spots. Gonna be crowded for the opener though.

The canned hunting issue has been settled and is legal with or without the amendment. The DNR did manage to get most of the regulatory authority over captive cervids shifted to the Dept. of Agriculture. In short, it's not really hunting it's farming of captive deer and elk. Likewise the amendment wouldn't prevent DNR from regulating commercial fishing as much as the legislature will allow. Get them (the legislature) moving on this issue and amendment or not the regulations could end commercial fishing.

Best part of the day was giving away 3 Remington 870 shotguns and Ruger 10/22 to these kids.

Currently using a temporary rule. This makes it a final rule and allows public input into it's design. If approved by the Advisory Council it then goes to the full Natural Resources Commission for consideration. After that there would be public meetings and debate before final rule is established. Might be in place by next June.

If you are in Indy I would contact Indy Parks. Otherwise try the closest state park like Ft. Harrison.
