If you are in Indy I would contact Indy Parks. Otherwise try the closest state park like Ft. Harrison.

I wouldn't call the support of the legislature overwhelming. In fact UNDERwhelming might be better. This took about 12 years to get to this point. It's important for everyone to help by voting for the amendment. Otherwise we have to start all over again if we really want this to happen.
Also, the DNR did NOT make this request. It came from sportsmen's organizations throughout the state. The NRA is just now getting on-board and they are certainly welcome but some people that started this are no longer around it has taken so long.

I know many of the conservation groups are interested in the long term funding of DNR. They want something the legislature can't touch. Not really possible but you could make it harder for them to raid the DNR funds.

You have to remember that they created this "mess". They don't see it yet...maybe never will.Best we can hope is they let it die after 5 years.

The 2016 Legislative summer study agenda has been released. This is the first (maybe the last) meeting to be held for discussions pertaining to legislation being proposed for the next legislative session beginning in January. Of note is the discussion on DNR funding.
Bills that go through this committee have the best chance to be passed in the regular session. Never seen one pass here and fail.

1. Fish & Wildlife division is short 28 people 2. Law Enforcement has come back nicely and is short only 16 officers after the current class gets in the field. 3. Forestry division is short 21 people 4. Parks division is 50 people short.
5. Once again (rather still) the Division of Forestry is being actively opposed from managing the state's forests. Asking for help in combating misinformation and lack of education in the general public. Mostly from Blooington.
6. Remember the Got Input submissions? Well, from April 1 - May 15 the DNR Fish & Wildlife Division received over 1600 comments. Of note there were over 400 comments on the bobcat issue alone. Per their handout the Division will present rule package to the Natural Resources Advisory Council at their next meeting in August or October. From there a final rules package will be given to the full NRC in either September or November with public hearings beginning in January and final adoption in March 2017.
7. Mark Reiter spoke on the new Federal funding that might be coming to Indiana. It could be as much as $22M but requires a match and Indiana is really bad about providing matching funds. Have to keep an eye on this to see what we might really get.
8. Lively discussion on County Deer quotas. Looks like we have reduced the Bonus Anterless quotas in 5 counties and increased them in 2 counties. Interesting point made on the state park hunts. If the hunter success is 22% or greater the park will be continue to be hunted. If it falls below 22% the park will have achieved it's goal until further botanical studies show a need for more hunting.
9. Discussion on the County Deer Advisory Council citizen petition and how to get it done. Had to leave before any resolution was reached. If I hear anything I will forward. I think you can see their petition over their Facebook page.
Best news was the hiring of a deer biologist and a mammalogist. There was a discussion on the Mounds Reservoir but like I said I had to leave. Maybe someone who stayed can fill in these last 2 blanks.
Jack
P.S. NRC meeting on Tuesday, July 19th at Ft. Harrison.

Just to be clear...Indiana legislature has passed an amendment to the Indiana constitution guaranteeing the right to hunt, fish and trap. The amendment will be on the ballot this fall after a decade of work to get to this point. It's important that everyone makes sure they vote FOR the amendment as forces will be out there voting against it.
Bottomline: it is not the law of the land yet and it needs your help to get finalized.

We had one of our campers visit our meeting the other night and deliver a thank you note for sponsoring him to the camp. We also found out another of "our" campers was chosen as camper-of-the-year. I think we got another thank you in the mail from another of our kids today.

We managed to send 16 kids to the camp this year. They fired around 20,000 rounds at the range today after attending Hunter's Ed classes yesterday. Pretty cool pics on their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/Karl-E-Kelley-Camp-325383110927882/?fref=nfLooks like they will get wet the next couple of days. Jack

Meeting is being held on May 12th at the Cliffty Falls State Park. Meeting is set for 7 PM in the evening to accommodate the public. Agenda is a little light (no Fish & Wildlife issues). Probably won't make the trip for this one. www.in.gov/nrc/2354.htmJack
