There is no way the charges or fine would stick. As a matter of fact when this reached a higher up or the media the DNR will beg to put this issue to rest. Its a shame if these are truly the facts of the case. He has a better chance of animal cruelty violation than any other violation. The guy should have called the Director and this issue would have been resolved immediately. Most CO's would have handled this differently, sounds like a rookie who just needs some training. I know the Director personally and I'm pretty sure he would not approve of a trapper leaving an animal like that in the trap for four days in a row before checking the traps. I'm not a trapper and I've explained why in my past posts. I do believe that that says that one has to check their traps once every 24 hours at a min. He should have brought along a catch pole and used it to release the cat from the trap. That or a large plastic container that could have been used to cover all but the cat's caught paw and then released the paw from the trap and later allowed the cat to get free from the container.

Aide and instruct does not mean to do for them.

Chubwub, you took it to a whole extreme on the deer. This guy didn't take the cat out of the trap because he was scared of it. Plain and simple. He let the cat suffer for three days eventually breaking his leg. There is no excuse. I agree if there is a safety issue to human life, another matter. Not doing it because he didn't want to is inexcusable. Same with my scenario. I shoot a deer, it falls to the bottom of a ravine. I don't feel like getting it and DNR won't help me I should be able to let it lay. I mean according to your post I can't read into that they are required to aide me in dragging that deer out, heck I could even get them to gut it. You are stretching the word "aid". Like I said in my previous post. Never trapped before but there isn't an animal in Indiana that I couldn't get out with enough effort. Heck I guarantee I could get a whole bunch of guys on this page to come along just to watch my attempt.

I've been told that if you have to kill something, don't tell anyone ...and you didn't hear this from me.

Three days in a trap!!! Waiting on someone to fix your problem?? Move back to the suburbs and forget trapping until to you learn how to trap. What a travesty! If I was a trapper wannabee and caught something unintended I would have quickly learned how to release it or killed it. Suffering sucks!! There is no justification for this story. Period. Unethical and just plain wrong.

I would've let it go for sure! Not only was it not fair to the animal I would've felt so bad for leaving it in there I would've had to go back pulled my big boy pants up and released it one way or the other but hindsight is... 20/20

I've never trapped anything before, but have felt trapped.
Anyway, I wanted to live trap some racoons to transplant away from my feeder, but I was afraid that I'd catch a skunk. I didn't know what I would have done, so I didn't do anything. I guess I could have ask you fellas.
Since then, I've been told how to let them out without getting sprayed.

Since then, I've been told how to let them out without getting sprayed. Yea 100% of the time, right :-) I trapped rats and coons for a few years and got a pretty little stinker in a dog proof trap. It was sleeping when I walked up to it. I did my best to build up courage to unhook it but couldn't do it. So I pulled my trusty walther p22 and shot it through the chest. The magic spot to keep it from spraying...it worked. I couldn't wait to skin it out. I got home walked inside and my wife started yelling at me about skunk smell...say what! I don't smell anything. I hightailed it back outside and could smell the skunk. As it layed in my truck it relaxed and released the smell. It hung around for days :-) good luck on live trapping them. I'd rather a bib cat run up me while running through rose bushes than deal with pepe again!

For those of us who have dealt with a skunk weather in a live trap or a steel jaw trap let us know how that technique for releasing a skunk without getting stunk up works. BTW: duff and I are planning a fall SNIPE hunt and we need a blocker,if your interested all you need is a gunny sack.

The fella I sold my last ATV to told me that they had caught them in live traps... accidentally. They used something to cover them or block them; I can't remember now. He said he lifted up the gate and he went on his way. Then some people just shoot them with a .22. Have you ever heard that two pitbulls are much more dangerous than one... it's just like two kids. Not sure that I would be brave enough to go anywhere with you and duff.

I can't stand to see anything starve to death; I like food too much. I'd have to try something. What would Homer Simpson do?

It was tight enough quarters that it couldn't position itself to spray. He would cover the trap with a piece of military tent canvass and carry it to the truck. During the drive home he would stop by a small, couple feet deep, steady moving stream and place the trap with the tail downstream and leave it there for a thorough baptism.
