I was squirrel hunting the other day but was really more day dreaming about coyote, and deer when a little coyote jumped out about 20 yards in front of me. About an hour later I walked up on two small doe's about 100 yards out and watched them for a few minutes before they walked off. There were a lot of squirrel's as well but didn't take any shots as I didn't feel like shooting up the woods with all this cool activity. I am going out tomorrow to pattern some Hornady 2 3/4 4buck varmint express. I will be using my Mossberg 500 12 ga. with a 20 inch VR barrel with chokes, great gun for hunting in the heavy stuff. I also got a new Fox Pro Wildfire call that I have been playing around with so I am basically ready for predator season lol. I will try to post some pictures of the results of my pattern testing.

I've got a Foxpro Wildfire call too but the end of last season I upgraded to an Alpha Dogg.I really haven't hunted with it much yet though, just once and I did call 1 in but spooked it when I changed calls, didn't even know it was around until it took off full speed. Needless to say I won't be doing THAT again.

Everyone and their mother in laws has a Fox Pro these days. Coyotes get educated to certain sounds after a while. So after the first day/night of the season the new pups that don't get shot will be educated. And if their parents are smart and educated to the sounds of the Fox Pro game callers they will teach their new pups to run the other way.
I've fooled a couple of mangy coyotes using some hand calls but not one has come to the sound of my Fox Pro FX3. I've yet to test the FoxPro Shockwave which I got as it can change the pitch of any of the Fox Pro sound files on the fly.
Good luck hunting the public areas after the first day. We have a lot of coyotes all over the place but they are hard to kill at times.

I cant wait to find out. I'm new to the whole coyote business, the learning process will be fun. How close could you get to them with the hand call?

I've had them almost run me over with a hand call. That was several years ago though. As already mentioned they are considerably harder to call these days. I used to wait till late winter but I'm gonna try to start early this year and try to get some of the young dumb ones to respond lol

I plan on starting next week around Tuesday. The weather should be sunny and mild, sounds like good coyote killing weather.

The coyotes where howling this morning in the front yard. Need to let my neighbors know that there might be some 308 rifle noise soon.

The hunt couldn't of went any better with yotes coming within 20 yards of me after only a few seconds of e-calling. I think I will move to another of the areas I liked a lot and try again this weekend, I don't want to put too much pressure on the same spot. I set up before the sun was fully up and I was completely camo and down wind of the call nicely tucked in some tall grass. The stand was in front of a pond along a bean field with a strip between the field and a woods, it worked perfect at least 3 ran right up in front of me. I was high on the first shot and grazed the top of his back but not good and he took off, I racked the second round and that time I gut shot him good from a going away angle, not very good shooting on my part. Next time I will try and get ahead of it quicker for more head/neck/chest and a cleaner kill but it happened so fast he was putting distance on me very quickly, I waited to long to start shooting, I got caught up watching.

I have been hunting the last two mornings but there are a lot of deer hunters in the fields. I have scouted around a lot so I hunted a few different areas were I seldom if ever see anybody else. I really liked the stands I had but no coyotes came in either day. I did see a little buck and a humongous doe, now I might come back to this spot and deer hunt for firearm season lol...

I have witnessed several coyotes come running in to mouth calls but never once an electronic caller has called one in.

Went deer hunting today and I had more fun listening to the coyotes than anything else. Deer season is over for me but the fun is just getting started with predators, varmints and crows.

I went crow hunting yesterday and I saw the biggest coyote I have ever seen. I know their coats are full right now but this thing was tall and thick, it looked like a German Shepard. Wikipedia says coyotes range 15-45 pounds but this big guy had to be 50 plus easy. I guess I have to kill it and weigh him to be certain lol.

Wikipedia says coyotes range 15-45 pounds but this big guy had to be 50-60 pounds easy. I guess I have to kill it and weigh him to be certain. I saw one like that a week to 10 days ago while deer hunting. At first I thought it was a yearling deer running through the woods, then I saw the tail.
