Started opening up the canopy at my new place. Forester will be doing a select cut on the property as well but may be a slow process due to seasonal flooding. They don’t have any use for the cottonwoods. Not even paper pulp or pallet wood. I have to decide whether to cut them myself or basically break even for them to cut and essentially leave them in place.
After starting the project myself just to see how it was going to go I’m now favoring for them to do it. Some of these things are absolute monsters and honestly a little daunting to tackle as the 25” chainsaw wouldn’t barely make it half way through the tree.
The neighbor will take anything accessible from the ground with his backhoe with grapple bucket to split for firewood. Again all this will be over time. The forester and I are thinking over a 2-3 year period. Mostly as I don’t want to completely wreck the place over the late spring/summer timeframe.

Too bad I'm not around .......there is NOTHING I like more than running a saw. One of the highlights of adulthood for me was getting a Stihl

This mature 8 has been avoiding cams, but I finally got some pics. He was passed a couple times this past season , but it is doubtful he gets the pass this fall.

Well, got the OK from my boss to work from Indiana a couple weeks this April. At least it will give me two full weekends to get in some work. Wife and I will start driving on the 17th to make it home for my Pop's Angel Anniversary (19th). I have 3 day weekends, should be able to get in some decent work. At least get some plots planted. Hopefully can find a tractor to rent out for at least one weekend. Gonna try to get some chestnut trees planted as well. Son will be flying in to work with me on the 2nd weekend and then driving back to Cali with me....Still living life through you all....SF Woody

Means you’ll be here for some of turkey season as well. Hadn't even thought about that one, but our Turkey population has taken a huge hit. Haven't had a Turkey on camera in over a year. My pop had seen a few pass through the yard in 2022. Used to have good amount a few years ago, sometimes easily count 15 or more in the walnut grove. Could expect to see them on game camera every time you changed the cards. Unfortunately, we have taken a hit on them, not sure why, maybe coyotes? But since deer season, only had a few pictures of a coyote or two. Did hear a big group while back home hunting off in the distance... SF Woody

I can look to see if there's any rental places near. I know a place in Wakarusa that rents all sorts of equipment but I don't know how far you are from there.

We're not planning on doing anything soon (and we don't use trail cams). Since we hunt for meat we do little to no management (plus we don't hunt our own property). Later this year though we may be taking down one of our double ladder stands, moving it, and also giving it a good cleaning (squirrels and other creatures using the tree made for a giant thick mess in the seats). Hunting clothes will be washed and put away in totes with their share of leaves and other forest stuff. I'll do some shed hunting this spring but that's more for fun than to see what bucks made it through (We already know of a good 8 pt that made it, saw him a few times during the week after Christmas). That's on the private properties we hunt. I don't really know what gets done on the Purdue property, my dad manages it and he doesn't say a lot until you actually ask.

This guy was chasing a young doe in my hayfield last night. Look at heavy staining from hocks on the rear legs.

Thanks esshup, we are down in Martin county. Last time I used Tri-County in Bedford. I checked and they have a Kubota. Might get that for a weekend with a grapple. Last time we rented a bobcat with a brush cutter and grapple. But it was really bad up in those woods. Nobody had been doing anything, so it was crazy in there. I'm looking forward to April getting here, have a good one gents...SF Woody

I believe breeding goes on from full moon in Oct thru late Jan/early Feb. The guys that think it only happens in Oct/Nov just haven't spent enough hours in the woods outside of those 2 months.

Old livestock pond I had cleaned out this past summer. Was an EHD pit, now holds 8' water and a good water source for wildlife.
