Jack, Thanks for keeping us up on this. Anything we can do to keep it on the front burner?

Not really...I would think they might ask for opinions but they're quite aways from that stage. First they have to get the IT guys in the loop and then see what's what. They may only approve turkeys who knows.

They have already talked to the Kentucky folks. The system they are proposing would give CO's in the field access to all the telecheck records. If they managed the dataset well, it would be a pretty small file... easily updatable to a PDA or laptop. They wouldn't really even need real-time access.

My buddy called the DNR about becoming a check station before the deer season started. They told him not to miss with it that they were 99.99999% sure next year there would be a tele check in place and 100% sure in two years that there would be one in place

The only bad thing I can think of is the little mom and pop stores that are check in stations, losing money from people buying drinks and food and all that impulsive buying. I will miss seeing all the pictures of checked in deer. They will be missed. RIP!

read all 5 pages of this thread...EDIT .....secondly I asked the DNR about telecheck 5 years ago....they said it was about $ and logistics with IT....Indiana is the most bass ackward state in the midwest...remember we used to be able to have a buddy check in our deer years ago, then they said NO, the hunter HAS to check it ...then they said we changed our mind...back to the way it used to be...tell me why, since the check station don't have to physically look at your deer why couldnt they have a metal tag with your license ( like Kentucky did years and years ago ) that YOU could put on in the field and then call in the info ....I realize since internet licensing that something would have to be done differently but geez.....I'm sick of running around loading, unloading , loading, unloading deer all the time just to drive them to a place to get a "real" tag. And it might not be such a big deal for bullwinkle but...I shoot really BIG deer and they evidently are alot heavier than his...lol

More of a hassle that wasn't bringing in enough money to make it worth it.

I suspect in the beginning you will have the option of going to a check station or using telecheck.

As far as I know it will not change unless someone steps up and requests a change during the stage 3 process outlined above.

If they start if for turkey. Wont they have to sell universal scales and measuring devices for everyone to use. You know that everyone will have different scales and some will use tape measures, rulers, yard sticks or just guess.

I don't know. No details were revealed. Like I said earlier you will likely have a choice of telecheck or the current check-in stations. I'll still go to the check-in stations for both deer and turkey.

Then again I know of a couple of places that are open late enough for it to not really matter. I can see how it would be beneficial to some to have a tele-check system. I'm not sure. I'd probably go to the check station still. I also see the point about the retailers. When we check in I always make a point to pickup something... ammo, scent, drinks & snacks or something like that. --hountzmj
