It's a myth that struggling deer hunters use that insurance companies control the doe tag numbers. It does not happen, ever, in any state. Besides, insurance companies make money off of deer conflicts. As for county limits, very few hunters kill even close to the number allowed. The average harvest per is less than 2 each It's a fact that farmers insurance company had intent to file a law suit against the state of Indiana for mismanagement of the deer population and I'll locate and produce sources for you. As far as the herd size being at good or high pop., how many of us driving 10 yrs ago and remember seeing countless deer dead on the road. 1 could tell when rutting activity started just by taking a drive. Any1 drive lately? I've seen 4 dead along the side of the road in the past month, and I drive a lot for not being a semi driver(approx. 6,000 miles in the past month). I'm not saying that the pop. is low in all areas of Indiana, but at least in my part(NE Indiana). From this, I can concluded of the 3: 1) the deer pop. is low 2) the deer are getting wiser when crossing the road and look both ways 1st 3) drivers are driving more defensively #2 & definitely #3 not happening. As to the comment of being a struggling hunter, my wife, son, or I could have easy shot the only 2 deer we've seen on my aunts farm. I know the neighbors might shoot them, but we've hunted every wkend since oct1 excluding 1. No rubs no scrapes on the entire property. I guess it's all in how u look at it whether we r "struggling hunters" .....

I am sure there are pockets across the state where deer numbers are down ..... but overall I think most evidence points to the numbers being steady or slightly up.
I have hunted the same couple of areas for the past 25 years or so and numbers and quality are better today than ever before.

I'm a actually a proponent of leaving it as is if my other choice is to do "one season" idea. Timex and I don't always agree but I fully agree it would take an overhaul we've never seen before to adjust bag limits and such to make our deer herd last. I have other opinions on seasons and such but to stay on point "one season" to me is definitely something we shouldn't do.

Still not much feedback from the crossbow guys. I just want to know if the guys who werent happy with the season they were given would be so willing to let the next group join them in October? Say it isnt guns. Maybe in a few years we have a legal slingshot! Would they still have the same attitude of opportunity for all?

Yes, I'm all for a slingshot season. More hunting is better. I'm really loving the new proposal on Draw-locs too.

One season, any weapon, October - Jan One tag per deer.
Let the state figure out bag limits after we complete the "reduction" they claim is needed.
Same or more opportunity for everyone.

There is ONE SEASON its called DEER SEASON ! You hunt the first part with archery gear then firearms then muzzleloaders then back to archery. One season.....deer season !

Funny how people can't chalk up a "bad" season to bad luck. Just because you didnt tag-out on a Booner, and two does a half an hour after daylight on opening day doesnt mean the herd is in bad shape nor the opposite if you did tag out on 3. Keep trying to re-invent the wheel. Morons!!! Move to South Carolina where you can hunt deer from August 15th with a gun, or any other "southern"state with more liberal gun seasons. Look at the deer numbers and size down there. Which do you prefer? If it "ain't" broke don't fix it!! I guarantee some dip will try to say "by god!, I usually see 100 deer opening weekend, and didn't even see one this year! Danged ol EHD and blue tongue done hit hard!.....and mountain lions. Ricky Dale-Johnny Jones done seen 6 mountain lions this year".

I like having crossbows in with archery. As to adding guns........well so far I've only carried a gun 2 times this gun season, I just prefer my bow or the crossbow. .....when I do carry a gun during gun season it's because I am having troubles with my back or shoulder and am afraid I can't pull my bow back (and my son lets me carry his 44 H & R lol).
Having guns in youth season has not dramatically increased our "harvest"........so far it hasn't helped at all in the last 2 years........ Would I support guns whole season? Nope, don't see the need....... .The seasons are great the way they are, there is plenty of opportunity for every hunter......... and I'll say that even if our "luck" continues and we end up with a vension-free freezer.

Adding more is not more, its less. Deer hunting is getting more and more watered down with each new proposal. The whitetails anatomy hasn't changed that i'm aware of, they aren't more elusive now, the herd isn't out of control.

The only reason the herd seems too high or out of control is the serious decline in available cover. The deer just keeps on breeding and the humans just keep on destroying their habitat.

What's not to equate?? Less collisions = smaller deer herd #s. Simple? And no not that the insurance lobbied but filed intent to sue the state & the company was farmers. I'll get u documentation asap if it can be produce. I heard this from one of the higher up guys who works at farmers. This took place before we had bonus anterless tags, if any1 can remember those days. Anywho... Both share a common link. doe harvest = less deer = less deer related automobile collisions. Does this make sense?

I say leave the seasons alone. I think that a bow is a bow vertical or horizontal and a gun is a gun no matter how you load it, but it could be done just like some western states do the wolf hunts. They set a number and sell (God only knows how many tags) and when that number is reached the season is over.
IMOP anyone that doesn't want crossbows in early archery season and then uses a muzzleloader during gun season is a hypocrit. Muzzleloader season is in December!!

I don't thinks he's trolling at all.. Very legitimate question.
The state has expressed concern that the herd is at all time high and needs reduced. Seems theres a constant push for new seasons, extended seasons and new weapons all the time anyway to add opportunity.
Most replies have described why they don't want guns all season, but haven't heard one reason why this change wouldnt achieve the states goal..
It would be very hypocritical for people who used the herd reduction as fuel for crossbow inclusion and the extra firearm antlerless season, to not support the one season, one weapon.
Personally, I don't think we need a reduction, crossbow all season or extra anther less seasons. One season would significantly reduce there herd in some areas that don't nessisarily need it..

If the only goal is to kill enough deer to control the herd size then yes guns would be the most efficient way of doing it. As we all know Hunting is MUCH more than that. Archery hunting extends the season and recreation for the folks that want to pursue that type of hunting. I would be firmly against a one season as it would kill archery hunting for most archery hunters...

You stated earlier that 95% of archery hunters put down the bow and pick up a gun as soon as they can. So yes, for the 5% of hunters that are for die hard bow hunters, things might change a little. For the other 95% , they would get exactly what they want, a lot earlier.

True...from the IDNR Deer Hunter Survey So yes, for the 5% of hunters that are for die hard bow hunters, things might change a little. For the other 95% , they would get exactly what they want, a lot earlier. I don't think so. They want to hunt with the most proficient weapon that they can in the season that they can use it. Like I said, if it was one season a lot of bows would be listed on Craigslist and there were be very few buyers..
