Featherduster you are right. We do not use a camera on less it for team use. As for a radio. Most sprint car tracks use a one way radio from the tower. Driver can not talk back. A two way radio isn't allowed. The one way radio is very useful for info to driver. Most times you hear the radio call out a yellow before we even see it. Has helped the safety of the sport a great deal. I would like to apologize for my last post if I came off wrong. I just have so much love, and passion for this sport that at times it gets the best of me. Again I'm sorry for that. God speed Kevin and keep Tony in your prayers. I have been in a race that a man lost his life. You never forget and it's a black cloud that you remember. But as sad as it is. It is a part of the sport that us drivers know and accept when we crawl in. Sorry again if I offended anyone.

Hornzilla,
You didn't offend anyone. I'm glad that you are here to post from the inside, I just took for granted that radios and video cameras were common place from watching nascar and the Indy cars.
Yes, this is so tragic especially when it is such a young man with his whole life ahead of him.
I worked on a new Habitat build Saturday and found out that a 24 year old young lady who's home I worked the last build has inoperable cancer. What a shock to see young ones die. I guess God has a plan for this that we don't understand or can't see?

Apparently I have seen a different video or at least have a different opinion of what I saw. What I saw was a driver walk into the racing lane, a car barely miss him and the driver step back, then that driver step towards Stewart's car. The next thing I saw was the back end of Stewart's car lift up. That is the point I heard the engine rev up a little and what I assume is what people keep saying his car swerved.

I was across from the pits at the indy500 where the crew guy got rolled under a tire, it is something I will never forget and wish I had never seen. One of the tragedies of this situation is Tony will most likely never be the same after this, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I'm a Land Speed Racer sanctioned through ECTA. I race motorcycles. I've never been in a sprint car but I have a feeling that some things are similar, like the fact that even though we are fierce competitors, we are all friends...brothers...a brotherhood I can't explain in words. The death of a friend, anytime haunts us. The death of a racing brother is especially difficult. I will forever be haunted by the death of a fast friend at our June 2012 event in Wilmington, Ohio. Gerry Deneau. I have vivid recollections of breakfast at the hotel before heading to Tech inspection. And rallying around makeshift toolboxes giving each other advice on how to handle the ly headwind we were dealt. And trying to calm Gerry's nerves as a first time racer. And watching his friend, Ali console him on a bad run due to shifting problems. Ali has raced for years and introduced Gerry to the sport at this event. When Gerry ran the track to his last breath on his ZX-12R...and the call for a coroner from my good friend and Race Director Keith Turk...well all I can say is the feeling is NUMB. Just plain NUMB. Here is a portion of a letter that Ali wrote as he tried to come to some measure of understanding of the whole thing: "Honestly the rest is a haze.....what happened? How did 175 mph go so wrong? Was it a medical issue? Mechanical issue? Was he confused about where the finish line was? Was he just trying too hard to go too fast this time around? I wish I knew...and yet I know no matter what it doesn't change anything, he's gone. And I feel like total doodoo for ever having brought him out. I know I'm not to blame, he was a grown man and wanted to race and do it the right way, the safer way, the legal way. Its the only real way to explore the limits of bikes this fast without ending up in jail....or worse. But I can't help but still feel like I had a say in it. I took him under my wing and tried to help him achieve a goal, a dream. And at 73 it is my understanding that his wife was finally ok with the notion. I feel like I can't look anyone in his family in the eye at the funeral without them looking at me going "You are the guy who got Gerald into this sorta going stupid fast thing...he was a 73 year old guy what the H... were you thinking?!" And yet all I did was think about his safety....I made him get a new helmet, back protector, taped up the bodywork below that is known to get crooked on zx12s at speed, checked his tire pressure for him at the track, his oil level, made sure the brakes felt ok in the pits. I had even taken the bike to over 180 mph in the past to make sure it was "safe and stable". I felt like I tried to catch whatever possible problem there could be and help him through it....and reminded him that at 73 he was definitely 1 in a million racing a bike like this. It was a long drive home home....blurry eyed here and there, I just needed to stay on the road, I didn't want to pull off the road too long and THINK. Coffee for lunch and 2 beers for dinner. Its Monday morning and I don't feel any better. I know he went out doing what he loved, literally. And I know it will take a long time for me to get through this. Thanks to everyone in the pits, ECTA officials and others for the kind words after the fact." Godspeed Gerald "Grandpa" Deneau It's strange. I don't talk of this incident much. It's hard stuff. But, it does help to put these things down on paper...or a thread like this to help the healing process. I hope and pray that the Ward family, Tony Stewart and associates and all those close to the incident will find some peace and closure...all in due time.

I really try and stay away from a topic like this. There's never a answer. And never anything good come from it. I will say that I know a little about the subject. I have raced sprint cars for several years now. I will also say that in the heat of battle emotions run high. what you think of my first question. I will say there is question on why he was so close to him. Also some times a driver is upset and will "buzz" a guy with dirt. The video can go both ways. In the end there was a young man that has lost his life. Another one that will have to live with what happened for the rest of his life. Like I said this is just my take on it. I have strapped in them many times and fully understand what's going on. It's a terrible shame. God speed Kevin Ward. Keep Tony Stewart in your prayers. Moral to the story: Stay in your car during a race. Fact is, had the young man not got out of the car he'd e alive today. It would be like running out into the middle of Interstate 70 at night...not good
God bless all the families..it's hard on both sides I'm sure.

According to Darrell Waltrip and Rusty Wallace, Tony is leaving the sport completely, selling out all his interests and getting out. They tried to talk him out if it but he won't hear it. They said he hasn't slept since the incident. His life is ruined completely. Tragic all the way around.

His life is not ruined completely. He is alive. He is wealthy beyond most folks comprehension. If he can get his head straight he will be fine.

Correction. Currently, his life is ruined completely. Wealth means nothing to someone who can't live with themselves. Ask a Robin Williams.
Hopefully, he'll get past it, but only time will tell.

I just saw the news release and it is hard to believe that he is walking away from all forms of racing. SAD VERY SAD.

The article I read didn't even attempt to be funny, that's just liable and slander. It quoted people in a way that was believable. There was nothing over the top to indicate parody. That's not cool!

From what I've read he is just taking time off and Buton is filling in. I would be really, really surprised if he retired. This man live's racing, it's his life. As with anyone I believe he just need's time to step back, reflect, mourn and then get back to his life. Which is a race car driver.

If that happened to me I can't really say what Id do, but my guy instinct tells me I'd be done with racing. Not sure how you could ever shake that. Hope he can.
Here is a question to compare it too...
If you ever (God forbid) accidentally killed someone in a hunting situation, would you hunt again?

I you aim a gun and pull the trigger that's no accident !!! That's a incident...and charges should follow.
