Well guys after a very disappointing morning at Missy I was planning on going home after fishing with my dad this afternoon. About 5 o'clock we started hearing some gobblers so I'm now at a part of it I have never been to sitting in the car while it's storming. Hoping to check it out real quick. May end up going back to my parents house for the night and trying it again in the morning.

I was on the lake. Lol. I never post location details online. To many trollers out there. We did catch some crappy. Mostly all trolling. Not many shallow last few days.

Hang tight jimstc...many times those Toms will gobble early on w/hens, and when the hens break off later in the mid morning they come to where they heard your calling earlier...I'd sit tight until 12 noon and call every 20 minutes or so..those birds heard you, they will show up on their time...might have to wait em out a while. Thanks for the solid advice. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. We pretty much did what you said. Jim Sorry it didn't work out today Jimstc...maybe tomorrow..good luck I'm rooting for ya!

A little gobbling but pretty sparse and nothing very close. Called sparingly and 15min or so after my last set I started hearing something off to the left and behind me in the woods ; was hoping it was a bird but never could see it. 10min later out of the woods line pops a Tom maybe 25yds out. My blind is between it and JDUB. whispered to him bird get ready - no response. Bird sees my Avian-X jake and he is coming in for the kill. JDUB has to see him now he is almost to the deke; I whisper "shoot"; nothing. Oh no he's fallen asleep I'm thinking. Bird s now right behind the jake and about to get it on. I'm thinking "great, my Avian-X is about to get mauled". Finally BOOM, a few feathers fly and the bird is taking to wing - crippled bird I'm thinking, not good! However JDUB quickly racks another shell and this time he hits home. Birds drops like a dive bomber and he's out of the blind faster than I could stand up, Dead bird when we walked up on it. 9.5" bird 7/8" spurs. We done! Turns out there was a branch in the line of fire for him and was waiting for it to clear. Awesome job JDUB!!! I love that you had the presence of mind for a second shot. Y'all need to get on some pheasant with me this Fall. You'd be surprised how many guys lose their bird because they dont jack another shell or fire the second barrel!

Skunked! We set up this morning on the west (Darrin) and south (me) sides of several acres of woods. We had coverage of the woods and the two fields abutting the woods. Set out the decoys on the field side of our set ups. Started calling with optimism, albeit misplaced. No response all morning. Moved positions. Called again. Still nothing. Called it a season and came home. If this was a black snake contest I would have done better. As I was sitting in my blind I notice this big black coiled snake at the edge of the blind. I determine that it is cold and lethargic after prodding it with a stick. Probably had been sleeping in my blind when it was vacant. Warm and dry. I text Darrin that I am about to shoot a BIG black snake. He educates me and I don't. Get a big, LONG stick and relocate him farther from the blind. Most excitement of the day.....

Yep Jim, sometimes the birds win..we've all been there..on a positive note you likely learned a ton about turkey hunting this year and made many memories.. When I started turkey hunting ,I hunted 3 years by myself, knew of no one who turkey hunted in 1993 in my part of the State, we had just got our first turkey season, I had to teach myself and made every mistake a person could possibly make...BUT i learned a lot.

Although not everyone filled tags this season, I still enjoyed reading everyone's hunting adventures. It kept me motivated prior to getting my bird and i hope it did the same for all you. Thanks for the entertaining and educational thread Woody! Congratulations to those who filled their tags and congratulations to those who didn't but still kept after it and logged many of memories afield! God bless!

A very accurate summary of my first season and the benefits derived from it. Made all the mistakes, learned from them and looking forward to the fall. Time spent in the woods are good times. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and giving me the motivation to keep trying.
