For those saying they were told in class that "everybody would pass" and witnessed actions to ensure it, please provide approximate dates, districts, counties, and instructors names if possible. My son took his 3 years ago at the Outdoorsman in Greenwood and 100% there were kids that couldn't read that dad was taking the test for the kids. My son took his on his own because they need to know the information. My daughter took the online version 2 years ago ( mainly because she babysitting a lot and wanted some more weapons safety) and didn't miss any. I am a strong believer if you can't pass the test on your own, you probably shouldn't be hunting.

I love it when all the veterans quote their past military training as their certifications...you know who working at the shooting range I did (indoor) were the most unsafe and "ceiling hitters"?
Yup, the veterans LOL....to be fair that group also provided some of the best shooters. Speaking of there was this old guy that I swear could out shoot some of our best shooters with his is 44 mag old revolver than some with their .22 ruger marksman...dude was also reloading knowledge as well. Miss that place everyday.

Although the logistics are certainly something to consider, I am also in the camp that anyone intending to take big game should pass some sort of proficiency test. I have lived in and seen the German HE course and test. It is much more a comprehensive "hunting in the context of conservation" multi- faceted shooting proficiency test. While this would be too much on our scale, a shooting test is simply not too much to ask. I can tell horror stories at LENGTH of absolute shiz shows out here in the west with people from non wide open states coming unpracticed and unprepared with weapons they sometimes have never even fired (let alone zero'd or or practiced with consistently). Let alone winging bullets hap hazardly at animals and putting zero effort into even checking for blood if animals don't fall immediately. Heck, last year I had MULTIPLE people come into the store I sell guns at to buy gun/optics/ammo combos to take STRAIGHT out on guided hunts. Sorry, but that is a disgrace. If you are gonna KILL something you DO OWE it as clean a death as possible.

Why not a shooting test for small game hunters? Plenty of rabbits and squirrels running around with their guts hanging out. Poor hunters and/or poor marksman don't kill much. So what?
Cars wound a lot more game animals around here than hunters ever could. Heck the deer that dented my fender and busted my windshield got away clean.
In many areas of the country many of us who would like to be hunting aren't because it's so hard to find a place to hunt. Go ahead and put more barriers to entry in place. The end result will be no hunting for anybody. Germany might be a good example. Not many people who live in Germany hunt...or fish for that matter. My family came here to get away from places like that.

I never thought I would see the day an Outdoorsman would call for MORE regulations. I suppose it is 2022 and I should stop being surprised...

I find it a bit ridiculous that people would call for a mandatory proficiency test for hunters AND hunter education, yet fully support open and concealed carry without a permit, testing or license of any kind.
In other words...It's okay to shoot @ a burglar without any formal training or knowledge of the laws concerning self defense, but we need to force hunters to be able to pass a hunter ed course AND shoot well enough to pass a proficiency test so that they hopefully don't wound a squirrel?
SMH...

I can drive bullets and arrows into targets like tacks and nails consistently. Always have since I was young. Used to shoot alot of archery tourneys back when I was young. Could do my fair share of winning then also. Put a live deer in front of me and it's 3 feet to the right. Always have since I was young...
