In addition to taking my gun and bipod, the kid also snatched my seat. I bought it a few years ago for Turkey hunting. It is very low profile and 200% comfortable, even for this tired old back. It kills me to sit up against a tree, but I've been doing it. We have looked for another, but none in our area. So, I got a free month of Amazon Prime, and found what I wanted. This week I got a new chair, and have a tripod rest coming today. The odds will be a little better this weekend in the skurry woods. 😇 I'd steal the .22 Hornet back too. I am gonna break out the 17hmr and 22mag this week to confirm zero. Both shoot great, so we can have more options for the longer shots.

The 17HMR still does that, but has a lot better/flatter range and my Marlin 17HMR is much more accurate. You can literally drill a thumb tack at 100 yards with every shot from a bench.

What bullets do you fellas prefer when using the .17 for squirrels? I'm pondering a long range squirrel rig that I can also shoot groundhogs with. Of course I'm mainly considering the .22mag and 17hmr.

Of course I'm mainly considering the .22mag and 17hmr. 17HMR: CCi TNT's are the most accurate in my rifle, but they got scarce at one point and I bought Hornady VMax and they are almost as good. Last year I scored two more bricks of the TNT's. 22 Mag: In the Marlin I had, it would shoot CCI 40 grain hollowpoints or FMJ the same out to 100 yards. FMJ for squirrels and hp's for groundhogs. I did try the 17HMR CCI FMJ about 3 or 4 years ago, but they just didn't group real well out of my rifle. I also had a few "runners" when they weren't head shots. Luckily, I use the HMR after all the leaves have dropped and I could see where the squirrels were running and then tipped over. Also had a few that would head up the tree after a hit and then fall out when they finally expired. I ended up taking the rest of that 50 round box to the shooting range just to run through it.

In. 17hmr, the 40gr TNT was most accurate for me. V-max and Rem accutips are so-so but what I have the most of. The 20gr game points weren't too bad. As anything, just gotta find what shoots best in your particular gun. My 17's have always wanted to shoot when super clean. I run a bore snake thru regularly.
22mag has been my sweetheart round. Always loved it. Been blessed with a couple super accurate ones. 30gr TNT and 30gr Vmax are my best loads, but only serve one purpose, seek and destroy. Head shots only. The 40gr CCI hollow point is my best go to round. If shooting for longer ranges, I know I'm gonna sacrifice some meat, and realize it is what it is.

What are your longest squirrel kills with the .17?

What are your longest squirrel kills with the .17? With the bullets being light and pushed easily by wind, 100 yards is the farthest I'll shoot and my scope is set for zero at that range. I just have to aim a little low at 75 yards. I'd probably go just over the top of their head if holding for center of the head at 75.

Probably would double my current effective range with my 10/22. Although, I may be handicapped on the longer shots by running a fixed 4x scope currently.

What scope magnification range are you guys using on the .17? I moved up to a 4-12 power and keep it on 8 most of the time.

We plan to be out both weekend mornings, depending on the weather. Calling for a little snow/rain mix. Got Luke set up with the 17hmr, and me the 22H skurry sniper again. I got the new chair and tripod to tote along this time. Hoping we get some action.

Showing snow is outta here till tonight. Got under an inch, but nice and calm out. Decided to take a ride down to Winimac FWA. Got a couple spots that produced in years past. Wish us luck. Hope to show some hero shots!😎

We ran into some very slick roads! It was enough we decided to shorten the trip amd just go to Kingsbury FWA. It's about 1/3 the distance.
So far, only seen one skurry on drive in.
