In the 48 years I've hunted them here I've only seen 1 and gotten 1 gray here in Jay County and I was surprised I saw that 1. Dad told me back when I started it was all fox squirrels around here and that's all I'd ever seen until then. The gray was just a couple years ago. I didn't start hunting squirrels hot and heavy until I got a driver's license. Back in the fall of '88 I didn't see very many grays in Daviess County unless it was on hardwood hills back off the road a ways. A few years ago I did not see many fox squirrels, but the last couple years seems like they have started making a comeback in the woods that I normally hunt. Any time I've hunted Hoosier National Forest in Orange or Lawrence County the only squirrels I saw were grays. It seems to me location and hunting pressure might have something to do with it but I'm not sure. When I lived in town I saw as many grays and black squirrels as I did fox squirrels but out here in the country it's been all fox except that 1. I figure a long time ago there were probably more grays around but they must have all been hunted. I've heard Southern Indiana has a lot of Grays and I know when I lived down in Kentucky they had grays down there too.

Add 1 more to team 3. Rained and windy most of the day ,but just before dark this guy was cutting hickory nuts in our backyard . If it is okay with the rest of the gang you can name our team. The Squirrel Poppers.

I heard a long time ago that gray squirrels are more aggressive and dominant over reds. So when grays thin out the reds show up. No clue if true or not.

I tend to see more grays when the leaves are out and they hang towards the ground. Hunted again yesterday evening and saw one fox squirrel and what I think was the rear half of a fox squirrel going off through the tree tops. What doesn't help is that this property has thick brush, etc, so going off trail is a bit hard.

Add these 5 squirrels to team 3 that decided to participate in the contest this morning . The picture of my rifle is a Remington Sportmaster model 12 that I got with S&H green stamps when I was just a young lad around 60 some years ago. It still gets the job done. [/url

Wish I had one to contribute! But the leaves on the ground at the property I am hunting right now at not made for sneaking unless you have moccasins on. So I totally screwed up on a grey.

The heat is keeping me out of the woods…. And the bugs. I've been sighting in some rifles and get swarmed just checking the target.

They were very active this morning where I hunt.I missed the first 1. I went on down farther and shot 1 but as it was falling it grabbed a limb and hung on a few seconds then climbed down the backside of the tree and through the grass it went. I stayed there and checked for another squirrel, saw 1 shot and it dropped with a thud. I looked around up in the tree and saw another 1, shot and it dropped with a thud. I waited a few more minutes and 1 started working through the trees behind me and worked around 180 degrees through them which made me sort of loose my memory of where the 2 I dropped were. I looked around and found 1 but not the other. I went on through the woods and saw 1 a ways off but knew I couldn't get closer without it seeing me so I shot and it dropped with a thud but when I got over there I couldn't find it either. I saw several others I never got a shot at because they kept moving. So I shot 4, am sure 3 are dead but only came home with 1. Sorry for the rambling but anyway add 1 to team 1. I'll try it again next week after the heatwave moves through.

When I shot, I watched him fall and hit the ground like a brick. Where he fell is pretty thick and I bet I spent about 15 minutes looking for him. I ended up doing a grid search back and forth, then up and down until I located him laying right next to a dead limb laying on the ground. He sure was hard to spot. Sometimes it just takes a lot of patience and hope it pays off. Good luck on your next hunt.

I sort of did that yesterday but the problem was I wasn't exactly sure on either 1 on the more precise location since I lost my bearings on the 1 and was so far away on the other. My vision problems here lately didn't help I'm sure. I'd been better off not even shooting the last 1. Thanks on the wishes, I hope it goes better too
