Dang, Woody-- you're too old to be fighting with your own porch in the middle of deer season! Glad it's not any worse. Get better!

I used to worry about what my brother in law thought of my buck each season. Years ago I stopped and could care less what anyone thinks. I get to kill 1 buck a year. It's my decision on what kind of buck makes me happy. The past 2 seasons I was fortunate to take a couple of nice bucks. One was a 6x6 with 4 extra points. This year I killed a small 8 point. I was very happy with that buck. My wife and 2 stepkids were there to help. I let my stepdaughter track it and find it. It was a great day in the woods as a family. Sure I would have liked a nice rack to hang on the wall, but the memories we made that day are more important. Amen. My favorite solo deer memories are all does, due to the circumstances. My favorites are my first bow deer, and my second is one that I shot on a snowy January day from the ground after a hard season. My favorite bucks both involve my oldest son, and are bigger deer just by coincidence. The first was my son's nice eight point youth season deer. He missed a close shot, but kept his composure and hit it when it stopped again farther away, though we were sure he missed. Finding that first blood and seeing that buck laying dead in the woods were the best memories period. The second was a nice nine I shot when he was with me in the stand. He saw it and I didn't, and I was trying to convince him he was seeing things when i finally spotted it and arrowed it at 35 yards. That kind of stuff is what it's all about!

Rookies. Everybody knows you buy a size small for your poaching slippers to avoid this very scenario.

It's good to have these options as father time tightens his grip!

A lot of truth there! I passed small bucks for, if I remember right, eight years. This year a young one came by, it felt right, so I shot him. Got a freezer full of good meat for my troubles.
I wish we could get back to the days when two trucks could pull into the gas station, one containing a monster and the other a spike, and just about every time the two hunters exchange genuine congrats and go on their merry way. Really, I think most of us are probably still this way. The problem is that the "Don't shoot Baby bucks" guy and the "Shame on you for being a trophy hunter" guy are the most vocal minorities, their voices amplified by social media. Some people need to put down others to rationalize their own choices, and since they never shut up they are the ones we notice.
Your tag, your choice. If it's a legal deer and you're happy with it, shoot what you want and respect the choice of others.

That's called "doing Grandpa right." Awesome job both of you!!
When you think about it, there were two impacts in this story.
One on the deer.
The other impact, beyond measure, was made on the life of a young lady over the years, and it goes way beyond deer hunting.

If the meat and organs look fine, and the deer wasn’t emaciated or at all sickly, I wouldn’t worry about it.

I think the stories are best seen and enjoyed as stand-alone posts. Personally, I would not want to see them jammed together in a miles-long "deer stories" thread. Just my opinion, to each his own.

If I saw that and didn't kill it I don't think I'd tell. No one would believe it!

No-shows were not allowed. Ditto on the Draw system for me! ( Though I'm disqualified now anyway ) Are you disqualified because you work there? Yep, that's what they tell me. Never saw it in print, but it seems to be the consensus. lol

How are the deer numbers there? I would have said, "not that high" but then considering that we had 70 hunters and took 21 deer on day one, that's not a bad take. I see them driving around but not daily.

Are they allowing no-show hunters in this year? I used to hunt that place consistently for about 15-16 years until they revamped the drawing system and screwed it up. No-shows were not allowed. Ditto on the Draw system for me! ( Though I'm disqualified now anyway )

We got 24 or 25 total on CLifty. (I forgot to check the sheet before I left on day 2.) 21 the first day. One big 12, several decent eights.
Many of the hunters pulled out early on day two so we only had single digits in terms of take.
There were around 70 hunters in the woods on day one. When you think about it, 20+ deer is a decent success rate.
We had one fiasco where the guy manning the South Gate decided to check the hunters out ( they were supposed to come to the office ). So we were calling a bunch of "missing" hunters at six o'clock.
Everyone behaved well for the most part, with the one exception being four guys that were reported still-hunting by another hunter when he left.

Yep. When a people gives up the right to make decisions to the government in exchange for "free" services, this is the result. Sad.

Never could count.😝 We just got to 14 at 4:00 or so. We had twelve at my school initial post. Dunno why I wrote 14 then. We have a couple more being recovered. I was surprised its such an even mix.

Ok so this isn’t technically in the deer woods, but I am working the check station at the Clifty Falls reduction hunt.😄 12 so far, 8 bucks, six Does. Biggest was maybe a two year old eight.
